Insects and Other Crawling Creatures Jewelry for Summer 2010

Mary Thatcher
This summer is seeing quite a few little bugs randomly crawling up chests, arms, and hands. It's always nice to have something sitting right on top of your jewelry box that looks like it is ready to take off, but no flyswatter is needed to keep any of these critters under control. Instead, a nice little temporary home like a finger will suit any of these jewelry pieces well enough for this summer. These guys will make the perfect beach, poolside, or dinner companion when you vacation in Fort Lauderdale or Miami this summer.

This scarab beetle ring by Kenneth Jay Lane is plated in 22 karat gold and has a resin center that looks like an antique stone that was found in an ancient pyramid. Swarovski crystals form the top part of the body, with two tiny green crystals for the eyes. This ring can be nicknamed King Tut or even Akhenaten. Available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $79.99.

Here is a pretty dragonfly charm that needs a chain to be suspended from around your neck. Made of gold plating with Swarovski crystals added, he will happily sit on your blouse or dress. He will be even happier if your garment has flowers on it for him to sit near. Pale blue, green, and clear crystals form the wings of this dragonfly. A larger crystal body, with green stones for the eyes, complete this intriguing insect. Available from Juicy Couture for $48.00.

This frog tack pin by Jay Strongwater is gold karat plating over pewter, with bright pink Swarovski stones forming the body. Just the color alone makes this antique looking, almost like the Juliana style of jewelry from the 1940's. Topaz colored crystals form the head, along with two sapphire colored stones for the eyes. It's hard to not pass up on this little jumping guy. Available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $100.00.

Your little frog tack pin will like this fly pin, also from Jay Strongwater. Also made with gold plating over a pewter base, pale green, yellow, and bright blue crystals adorn this little flitting bug. This is the perfect addition to your office jacket or evening dress. Available from Saks Fifth Avenue for $50.00.

Moths may only seem like a nuisance but this one is quiet and well behaved and won't buzz your ears. A tiny snippet of silk forms the background, with tiny beads and rhinestones forming the wings of the moth. Suspended from a gold plated chain and made in France, this will look nice with a sundress this summer. Available from Anthropologie for $158.00.

Now here is a dragonfly by Vernissage that is sitting on a filigree outline of a floral bouquet. This is an exquisite piece that looks like heirloom jewelry. No doubt your daughter will want to inherit it, too. Made of pink and white burnished gold on a 30" chain, this dragonfly is available from Barney's for $2,400.00.
