Everything You Wanted to Know About the Baby Food Diet...But Were Afraid to Ask!

M.G. Hardiman
Come on. Unless you live in a hole in the ground, you've heard of the Baby Food Diet. That's right, a diet for adults that consists of eating baby food. The Baby Food Diet is so popular that even Hollywood stars have gotten into the act, opting to eat soft, runny baby food instead of the usual pizza, tacos, or all-American hamburger.

Talk of the Baby Food Diet Hits the Tabloids

Rumors run amok in Hollywood these days, especially about the latest diet craze, as big screen Hollywood stars like Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon were rumored to have gone on the Baby Food Diet. But, don't believe everything you've heard or read about The Baby Food Diet. Unless a Hollywood movie star admits to indulging in the latest diet craze, it's probably the stuff of tabloids more than anything else.

Is the Baby Food Diet Just Another Fad?

The Baby Food Diet has been around for quite awhile but hasn't spawned cottage industries like South Beach, Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Jenny Craig or Atkins have. No, indeed, you won't find self-help books, yogurt or frozen dinners from The Baby Food diet. You won't be able to buy cookbooks, breakfast bars or beverages from The Baby Food Diet. There's no one website devoted to The Baby Food Diet (yet). In fact, there's very little on the market today on this particular diet at all. Why? Because The Baby Food Diet isn't like other diets.

How the Baby Food Diet Works

Following The Baby Food Diet is really simple. All you have to do is eat one adult-sized meal and baby food for the remainder of the day. What does this do for your diet routine? A lot more than you think. By adding baby food to your diet, you're removing a lot of the added fats, fillers, chemicals and additives routinely found in processed food today. If you buy organic baby food, in particular, you can be sure that the food you ingest is free from all the stuff you don't need in your diet, like hormones, antibiotics, and other processed ingredients.

Advantages of The Baby Food Diet...and its drawbacks

Like all diets on the market today, The Baby Food Diet carries a number of benefits, including:

Baby food is readily available from your local grocery store and other retailers.
Baby food comes in a wide variety of flavors, which should keep your interest.
Baby food portions are quite small and, as such, control the amount of food you consume.
Organic baby food is also available and much healthier than processed foods.
Baby food can be easily taken to school and work and easy to store in your backpack or knapsack.

And, like all diets on the market today, The Baby Food Diet has several drawbacks, among them:

Baby food is so soft, it may not satisfy your desire for different food textures.
Baby food portions are so small you may be tempted to eat several jars at once.
Baby food tastes bland which may not satisfy your taste buds.

The Baby Food Diet is here to stay

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about two-thirds of American adults at any given time diet to lose weight or prevent weight gain. Of these, according to CDC, 44 percent are women and 29 percent are men. Sadly, only 5 percent of these dieters will be successful keeping the weight off and many of these dedicated dieters will regain the pounds they shed.

The Federal Trade Commission estimates are even more sobering. Each day, Americans spend about $109 million each year on dieting and related products, like self-help books, foods, medications, vitamin supplements, and exercise tapes. That amounts to about $34 billion per year and shows no sign of slowing down. Celebrity names have long made diets big business, like Britain's Sarah Ferguson and former American Idol finalist Jennifer Hudson (Weight Watchers), actress Tori Spelling, singer Marie Osmond, star quarterback Dan Marino and longtime Dolphin's Coach Don Shula (NutriSystem), and, American rap artist, actress and singer Queen Latifah, actress Valerie Bertinelli, Seinfeld star Jason Alexander, actress Kirstie Alley and former White House intern and now-businesswoman Monica Lewinsky (Jenny Craig).

This means that Americans will continue to pursue new diets and other ways to lose weight, like adopting The Baby Food Diet, which has added advantage in this economic turndown of being the most cost-effective diet around. But, it remains to be seen if celebrity endorsements come its way.

Yes, indeed, The Baby Food Diet is easy to start, easy to continue, easy to carry and easy on the pocket book. This is one diet that's good for you and loaded with fruits and vegetables. Simply put, while questions remain about its long-term effectiveness, it sounds like The Baby Food Diet is here to stay.
