Have you ever wished that you can one day, be your own boss, work any hours you want without having to worry about not being able to make ends meet? With the economic downturn that is happening, a lot of people are looking for ways to provide an alternative income as opposed to their 9 to 5 jobs. This may be a good time to get in the vending business. Being in the business myself, there are things that I wish I knew when I first started.

Going into this business you need to ask yourself if you can be a one-man-band. Taking on this business, you will become the owner, marketing rep, maintenance person, and the customer service. If that's not the kind of business you like, look for other opportunities.

The most important thing about being a candy vending machine operator is to do your homework and research thoroughly. Know the business before you jump in. To get started you'll need machines, and there are a lot of options out there. Explore these. If you're on a budget, you have the option to buy second hand machines or even rent them from operators already in business. This way you don't have to invest a fortune and you get a feel for what works and what doesn't. You can easily find second hand machines from local auction sites. If you are looking to rent, call up local operators and ask if they can work out a deal for you to rent a few of their machines for a period before you purchase your own. Once you've got that taken care of, you will need to find locations for your machines. Practice, practice, practice.

You'll come across a lot of fussy, reluctant and impatient owners, but with enough experience, you will be able to turn them around and they'll be happy to place your machines at their premises. After you've installed the machines, make an effort to check on them often, at least in the beginning phase, make sure they're taken care of and not left empty and dirty. Talk to the people on premise, you'll get a lot more first hand information about the usage and attitudes towards the machines than hours of paper research. Now, just sit back and watch your hard work turn into profits.
