Inspiration for Your Staycation

Making the Most of Where You Are

Elle
With the economy ruining the vacation plans of families across the nation, the term "staycation" has become common. While taking a break from the hustle and bustle of daily life can be enjoyable all on its own, having to stay home, when you should have been in New York or Barcelona, can be depressing. To ensure that you make the most of your escape, use this guide for inspiration.

1. Check out your local library
I was amazed when I went into my local library this week and discovered that Orange County has moved into the technological era. I can search their catalog online and have books, DVDs and video games delivered to my door free of charge. I can save my reading list online for when I just can't remember the name of that great novel I read during my staycation. Host a movie night, free of charge, with up to 20 DVDs at a time from the library.

2. Find a new restaurant that is not a chain
It seems that in suburban areas it's hard to find a restaurant that is not a chain. However, family owned or independent artsy joints are a great experience. Do some research and find out which independent bars and restaurants have interesting events or art shows. I discovered The Social Chameleon in Orlando, a tapas and pizza place with an incredible selection of beer. Brett, the owner, is the only chef; he's there 7 nights a week and is truly a talented artist of the culinary kind. It might take some work to uncover a gem such as this, but when you do you may never eat anywhere else!

3. Wine tasting
Whether it's in your town or a few towns away, you definitely have a local wine bar. Most wine bars offer an economical way for you to wine and dine. Whether you're a connoisseur or completely new to wine culture, a wine night is bound to make you feel like you're on a classy European vacation. If you find the right place, the owner might be willing to take your tastebuds on his or her favorite grape-filled adventure.

4. Exercise
No one wants to hit the gym while they are on vacation, but there are dozens of activities to be experiences right outside your door. If you own a bicycle, find out what the best local bike trails are. If you're feeling more adventurous, try a hiking trail. If neither of those ideas strike your fancy, look into taking a beginner class at a local dance studio. If you're local wine bar happens to also play salsa music, you can show off your moves after a glass or two of cabernet savignon.

5. Art
Whether you're looking at art, making art or buying art, artwork is an excellent way to make you feel like you're far from home. If you know any local artists, see if they will give you a free or cheap lesson. If you're not quite ready to take a paintbrush to a canvas, visit an art museum in search of some inspiration.

Even in these tough economic times, you can make a staycation feel like a vacation a thousand miles from home. Be sure to document your journey via social networking or a blog, so that future staycationers can find inspiration in your discoveries.
