Install Dormer Windows to Transform Your Attic

Brian Jones
Almost everyone will agree that it would be nice to have more space. I don't really know anyone who claims that they don't know what they would do with additional habitable space. The strange thing is that many homeowners do have this space, especially in older, historic, Victorian, or other multi-story dwellings. What could be a better addition to your home than not having to build a complete addition at all. Use the attic. I have seen some of these attics. They are dark dingy places, many of them without true floors and only one porthole of a window. These attics are easily and affordable converted into extra rooms, bedrooms, game rooms, studies, and what I always wanted to do with it, a dedicated and quiet writing space.

One of the biggest problems with converting an attic is how to get more light into the area. Certainly some forms of track lighting could be set up, but a lot of time, there is not enough overhead space to justify it. You could put in skylights, but this just doesn't look right in some buildings. The other, and most realistic option is to simply install a couple dormer windows.

Dormer windows have been around for centuries and you can see them in houses all across the country, but they are more popular in New England and the Midwest, where older two-story houses dominate. If you are not familiar with them, dormer windows are simply sections of the roof raised up to be parallel with the floor and then side walls built in and a window installed in the new opening.

Dormer windows will not only provide enough light during the day to eliminate electric lighting altogether, but they will also provide extra space for décor, books, or nice window treatments. If you own cats, they will appreciate a new dormer window bedroom. The windows are also superior for the views they provide. If you have a country house, everyone will be clamoring for a view of the countryside they provide. If you live near mountains, even better.

The space provided by your new windows will open the room up and make it breathable and homey. That dingy old attic will become the most sought after place in the home to just get away from it all and relax. I have seen houses virtually transformed not only on the inside but on the outside as well. Dormer windows are attractive and acceptable. The addition will increase the value of your home and the remodeling will provide not only an expense, but an additional asset in your portfolio.

If you understand what I am talking about with your dank and dark attic that is something out of an H.P. Lovecraft story, I hope you will be even more excited in the installation than I am writing about it.
