Install New Kitchen Sticky Vinyl Floor Tiles - DIY Home Improvement Project

Use Sticky Vinyl Tiles to Give Your Kitchen Floor a Fresh New Look

Marie M. Daniels
With a few supplies from your local Home Depot or other home improvement store you can have an updated DIY kitchen floor without busting your budget. The option of using sticky tiles or peel and stick tiles over linoleum is to save money. By using the sticky vinyl tiles and doing it yourself you can save on your kitchen floor home improvement costs.

These sticky tiles for kitchen floors can be a great option for rental properties, lower income housing, starter homes or anyone wanting to save a few dollars. You can improve the look and value of your kitchen or bath if you update the floor with these self-sticking tiles. You may think that the sticky vinyl kitchen tiles will look cheap and unattractive at first but when you see the finished product you will be pleasantly surprised.

Materials Needed: Sticky Vinyl Floor Tiles, ruler, box cutter or heavy-duty scissors.

Approximate Cost: $50 to $100 - Cost will vary depending on price of tiles and size of room.

Time: One Day

First Step to DIY Sticky Kitchen Tiles:
You will need to prepare the kitchen or bathroom floor for the placement of the stick and peel tiles. The kitchen floor will need to be level and clean before you adhere the sticky tiles. If there is old carpeting or linoleum you will want to take it out first. Then the floor has to be smooth, so if it needs holes filled or sanded you will have to sand out the rough spots. If your floor is not level or insulated you may want to use an underlayment or layer of plywood.

Once you have stripped, sanded and cleaned the sub-floor you may need to prepare it further. This step could incur extra costs but can allow the sticky self-adhesive tiles to adhere better and last longer. You may want to get a bond enhancer primer for self-stick tiles from Lowes, which makes the surface of the floor tacky and helps the stick on tiles stick even better.

Placing Sticky Vinyl Tiles on the Floor:
You will need to find the center of your room before you put any of the sticky self-adhesive tiles on the floor. To find the center of the floor you will need to measure the length and width and find the cross point. Then you put the sticky vinyl tiles on the floor by removing the backing and placing on the floor. If you put four sticky tiles in a square shape in the center of the room then you can work out to the edges from there. Tiles around the edges of the floor will need to be cut and trimmed carefully so there are no gaps.

By installing DIY sticky vinyl tiles you will save on the cost of flooring and you can put that savings toward other home improvements. It would cost more money to have linoleum or ceramic tiles installed in your kitchen or bath. So by using the sticky tiles to redo your kitchen floors you could save over half the cost by doing it yourself and using the lower cost vinyl tiles.
