If you're on a budget or trying to safe some extra money go with laminate or vinyl. You can buy laminate flooring that looks like wood, marble or tile. It is available in many different colors, patterns and textures. Laminate flooring is actually a photograph embedded between a clear layer and a fiberboard backing. Vinyl is also available with a wood, stone or marble look. Both laminate and vinyl will work great in almost every room in your house although you should avoid using laminate in the bathroom. Laminate is available starting at just $2.00 per square foot and vinyl starts at just $1.00.
If you want to go natural and eco-friendly there are a few options available including ceramic tile, cork, linoleum and bamboo. All of these options work well in any room, including the bathroom. Ceramic tile starts at $3.00 per square foot and, along with bamboo, is both very hard and durable. Bamboo is a regenerating grass that is harvested over and over again so it is eco-friendly and it is harder than oak. It's cost starts at $6.00 per square foot. Cork and linoleum both have a soft feel. Cork flooring, which starts at $4.00 per square foot, is made from by-products of the wine bottle stopper industry and is naturally hypoallergenic. Linoleum, starting at just $3.00 per square foot, is made from natural ingredients and it is solvent free. Linoleum has a soft surface that wears well and holds up to water.
Carpet is best used in rooms where people spend time barefoot. Starting at just $2.00 per square foot it's a great choice for bedrooms and living rooms. The new lines of carpet have better texture, stain resistance and durability. There are also more options available now with all of the synthetic yarns available including, geometrical and floral patterns. You can also buy carpet as easy-to-install tiles that let you create custom patterns and rugs and easily change them over and over again.
If you want hardwood flooring but don't want to pay the high price for the real thing you can buy engineered wood flooring. The engineered floor features the grains and textures of real hardwood flooring and can be bought in many different colors and styles. Engineered wood is made of thin layers of wood covered with a hardwood veneer. You can find it starting at just $3.00 per square foot. You should avoid using engineered wood floors in bathrooms because water can damage the wood.
There are many affordable options if you're looking to change the style of any room in your house. You can go green with bamboo or linoleum if you're trying to be eco-friendly or you can make a mural out of carpet tiles in your living room for a dramatic change. Try using a dark laminate wood for a formal living room or update a boring bathroom with a new ceramic tile floor. What ever your budget or skill-level there is a flooring option available for you to make a change.
