Instructions to Knitting a Woman's Hat

Winter's coming quick, and there's nothing that'll keep you warmer than a homemade knitted hat. Of course, buying a knitted hat can be quite costly, so doing it yourself will not only give you quite the satisfaction of this great achievement, but it will also save you money.

A great hat trend then never goes out of style, and will never leave you cold is a lace-edged knitted hat. By knitting the hat, you can adjust the size to fit your head or whoever's head the hat is being made for. The pattern that you can follow with these instructions is worked over a multiple of six stitches, so you'll want to add or subtract six stitches for every 1.5" of preferred head width depending on the head circumference.

You will only need a few materials to get started. For materials that you may not already have, you'll need to purchase yarn, knitting needles (use size US6 or size to knit gauge), one stitch marker, and a tapestry needle.

Here are some simple instructions to guide you through the process of making a beautifully designed laced knit hat.

Cast on 84 stitches on a 16' circular needle.

Row 1: Stitch.

Row 2: Purl stitch (reversed regular knitting stitch)

Row 3: Yarn over, knit 1, slip1, knit 2 tog, pass slipped stitch over, knit 1, yarn over, knit 1 (repeat this all the way around.

Row 4: Knit.

Row 5: Knit 1, yarn over, slip1, knit 2 tog, pass slipped stitch over, yarn over, and knit 2

Row 6: Knit.

You'll then want to repeat all rows about 7 or 8 more times.

Row 14: Knit.

Continue knitting all rounds until piece measures 5 inches from the bottom.

You'll then want to begin the decrease:

1st decrease: Knit 12, knit two stitches together, repeat this all around and then knit the next row.

2nd decrease: Knit 11, knit two stitches together, repeat this all around and then knit the next row.

3rd decrease: Knit 10, knit two stitches together, repeat this all around and then knit the next row.

4th decrease: Knit 9, knit two stitches together, repeat this all around and then knit the next row.

5th decrease: Knit 8, knit two stitches together, repeat this all around and then knit the next row.

Then continue by dividing all of the stitches evenly between the two circular needles, and move on to the 6th decrease which is, knit 7, knit two stitches together, repeat this all around.

You'll want to continue this pattern, while decreasing all rows, until only 10 stitches remain. At this point, pull the yarn through the remaining stitches with a tapestry needle. Pull the end through to the inside of the hat; weave through the knitting and trim.

Now that you've completed you're lace trimmed hat, you're ready for whatever this cold winter will bring you! Be prepared to make a few more, once you're friends see what you've created.
