Insulated Concrete Forms: A Greener Way to Build Your Home

T.R. Humphrey
Insulated concrete forms also known as ICFs are concrete blocks with foam insulation. ICF's are forms for poured concrete that stay in place as a permanent part of the wall. They are made of foam insulation and are pre formed interlocking blocks or separate panels connected with steel ties. ICFs come in several brands. Polysteel ICFs are excellent for exterior walls. They save you money on your energy bills. They are strong and very durable.

The ICFs help keep the temperature of the structure constant. Homes stay cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter. They usually save the homeowner 30 percent on heating and cooling bills. These insulated concrete homes are ideal for going "green'. The polysteel forms are made from recycled products. The insulated concrete forms produce little waste and excess materials. All leftover products are all 100% recyclable.

Once the concrete is poured, the foam helps keep air out so that the concrete cures slowly. They continue to cure up to 180 days after being poured into the form. Which makes them stronger than solid concrete walls. There was even a story about a Pontiac Firebird slamming into one of these homes at the speed of 90 miles per hour and only a 3x5 section of the walls exterior was damaged. Walls constructed with these insulated concrete forms have been tested to withstand debris from 250 mile per hour wind. ICFs could really benefit those that are in areas known for tornadoes, hurricanes, and earthquakes. They reduce sound by 12 to 25 percent. Plus reduce airflow which makes homes or buildings fortresses against drafts, dust, and other allergens. Some homeowners claim there's no creaking in the walls when high winds or storms are raging outside. Owners of these special built homes can barely tell when there is a storm it is so quiet.

Building costs of these homes will be four to eight percent higher than traditional buildings. However, the long- term benefits of energy savings as well as lower insurance premiums is a plus. You won't have to worry about wood rot from undetected leaks in your home. This type of new construction is also good for commercial building as well. They offer security, strength of steel, and of course the energy efficiency. These homes made from insulated concrete forms are very durable and make a great alternative for building.
