You must begin by becoming more familiar with technology. Whether it involves using a computer or displaying something using a projector, if you don't understand how to use the equipment you are destined to make a mistake with it. Spend time getting more comfortable with the technology in your room and learn all there is to know about it. Developing comfort with this equipment will often relieve any stress that might be associated with its use.
Your laptop can be a valuable tool. Learn everything there is to know about such a tool. You can make your life much easier by using a word processor to create lessons and student work. Great software can allow you to record student grades and even configure averages with the press of a single button. Also analyze your data to help improve your instruction as you identify your areas of opportunity. You can also make lesson's more engaging by using powerpoints and presenting them to your class. Many schools even have mobile labs where a teacher can check out a set of laptops to use with students. Imagine how excited and much more engaged your students will be if they were using their own computer!
Take advantage of the plethora of educational websites that exist. There are thousands of sites to find lesson plans, give students extra practice or have students play educational games. This will provide an opportunity to provide variety in your room while also making the learning relevant. Students should constantly use the internet to research new and interesting topics. Just make sure to use student-friendly search engines and set parameters for your students.
Never forget to ask questions. No one knows it all, and if they claim they do they are lying. When you don't know something ask for help. Many schools have a technology specialist who can usually answer your questions. If now ask other veteran teachers for help.
Technology really is a great thing. Learning to use it will increase the achievement level of your students and create a learning environment that has rigor and relevance. Learn all you can and become comfortable with technology and its tools. They are clearly here to stay!

Post a CommentIs it possible that we are doing our students a diservice by using technology too much? I teach science and would rather dissect an actual specimen than do it on a smart board. I would rather have a disscussion face to face with students than have a discussion in a blog. Is there that much of a difference between reading off of a screen than out of a textbook? I agree that there are huge benefits to using technology in the classroom, but is it possible that we are taking it too far?
