It is not expected of you to learn something at an event designed to make you laugh. But in fact there are many gems of truth hidden within the jokes and puns of the truly intellectual comedians of both the past and present. A truly hilarious comedian can spin an observation about something the mankind does every day but fails to realize the funny true of it all, be it bad or good. These comedians are in a sense the grand standing prophets of an era that has left religion behind. People no longer crave a scare tactic to be taught a lesson in humility because laughter works so much more effectively when we are looking for self evaluation.
Some crowd favorites are the boys of the Blue Collar Comedy tour; Jeff Foxworthy, Bill Engval, Ron White, and Larry the Cable guy. Although these men are truly the definition of what it is to be a red neck it is in fact why they are so widely loved, especially in the southern States. They are a glorious tribute to all the dumb things southerners do in their everyday life. So the audience is, in reality, laughing at themselves because they know it all to be true.
An edgy look at this premise is the black comedian Chris Rock. He brings a wide variety of humor that closely looks back on black slavery as well as current black racism in the world today. Rock has always pushed this boundary in a very serious fashion but stresses to no end that he'd rather make people think than laugh at his jokes. The interesting fact stands that Chris not only has a large black audience but a white one as well. Even at times when he talking about white slavers pairing off big dumb black slaves to mate and killing the smart ones off, you will still find people laughing in the audience. Facing the truth is far better then leaving it locked up in the past. Secrecy promotes fear.
An all time favorite comedian George Carlin tore apart the Ten Commandments to reduce them and make them much more manageable for the modern man. After a long rant of explanations and direct bashes to the people that wrote the original list he ends up with two. 'Thou shalt always be honest and faithful to the provider of thine nookie, and Thou shalt try real hard not to kill anyone'. How did he arrive at these isn't just hidden within his performance but inside the fact that people know and respect him for doing things like bashing religion. Like a religion comedians have a following of people that believe he is right. Even though many covet their beliefs heavily they still would listen to what George says and start to think that there is something wrong with what they are doing. Why? Because it's the truth.
Comedians have it rough but they seem to be having an easier time teaching people about the problems we face in our every day then any religion has ever done in the past. We have always been looking for an answer to what is wrong in our lives. Comedians make a living from showing us these flaws and making us laugh at it. Perhaps today it's better therapy to find a good comedian instead of a therapist or minister.
