I really don't know who said this and at this time, I could care less. This quote is very, very wrong.
I agree that people who work hard do get a good reward and are very honorable people. But life is totally different these days than it was way before. Forgive me if it's offensive, but there's definitely luck involved, and sometimes corruption.
People make their own luck. I hate to sound rude and disgusting, but the reason why the secretary with no experience got the job instead of someone who was trained was because she did oral on the boss. Or she had bigger breasts. These things happen all the time. Some companies are really disgusting and corrupted enough to hire someone who will screw them a few times, or hire people that are in the family business. This is probably the main reasons why people don't do their jobs right all the time. How pathetic.
And when it comes to interviews? You need to have full availability, tons of job experience, and have a friend or two in the business... in order for someone to look at you resume to consider you. And this is for bagging groceries. A lot of companies are really corrupt, and usually cheat workers out of things they deserve. People deserve a lot more than minimum wage, especially when it comes to income taxes.
And what about the people who can't work? What about the people who have cancer or need to get social security or something of the sort? It's their money. So why are 4 out of 5 people denied the money that they worked hard to get... is the government so greedy, that they need to spend that money on what they call "the city"? Yeah, right... show me the improvement. Crime rates, jobs, mortgages all share something in common. They all have gotten worse. So where's my money going into for that?
So here's what I think. You need to be extremely lucky to succeed. Hard work is not enough. If you truly want to make it, then you may want to blackmail or seduce some people in power. Just look at Evita. Do people know why she got famous, and ended up being from poor class to First Lady of Argentina? It's not because she worked hard. Nope, not at all. It was because she dated men in high places. I don't see where the hard work comes in from sleeping with a few men. Now, believe it or not, I am not trashing Evita Peron. I love what she did for her people. I'm just telling it like it is.
To conclude my thoughts, I leave you with this thought. Whoever made up the quote above died unsuccessful, or did very dirty things to get where they are now.
