One of the main problems of being on a diet is that you feel you have to constantly maintain some strict approach if you are going to be successful in losing weight. If you give in to some forbidden food, for example, you feel that the whole diet is ruined and you might as well eat anything and everything.

Even if you aren't on a formal diet, however, a food craving that seems out of control is hardly beneficial to your health. Candy and cake are good, but you can't live on them.

If you are interested in controlling food cravings, then, try these tips.

Tip #1 Recognize What You Crave and When

One of the most obvious tips for controlling food cravings is linked with simply knowing what you crave and when. In other words, do certain situations trigger your desire to eat a certain kind of food?

Just as some people light up a cigarette when they are talking on the telephone, you might overeat donuts when you are watching a movie. The point is that you can control food cravings by controlling or even avoiding the situations that trigger them.

Tip #2 Feed Your Hunger, Not Your Craving

Another tip for controlling food cravings has to do with identifying real hunger as opposed to the mere presence of an appetite. You can like certain foods and want to eat them all the time, but if you eat regular meals and avoid being hungry, you will be in a better position to control food cravings.

Tip #3 Look for Distractions

Sometimes you might find that you want to eat just out of boredom. Do you reach for the carrots? Probably not.

Fortunately, your food cravings can be controlled as you become distracted by other activities. If you go for a walk for 1/2 hour, for example, you may find that the craving has subsided and that real hunger has returned.

Tip #4 Drink Lots of Water

Drinking lots of water is a good idea, anyway. It can also be a good tip for controlling food cravings.

As you drink water (another distracting activity), you will feel fuller and will be less inclined to give into those less healthy foods you are craving.

In sum, whether you are on a diet or not, you should control food cravings since these can have an adverse effect on your health.

By learning what triggers your food cravings and how to be distracted from them, you can begin to eat in a more controlled and beneficial way.
