Interesting Commentaries About Love Found in Mummy Movies

L. Vincent Poupard
In almost all of the incarnations of mummy movies, there has been a common plot thread about love. In mummy movies, we find many interesting arguments and commentaries about love, but the average person misses them in favor of the ambiance in which these arguments are set.

Current Love vs. Ancient Love

In almost all mummy movies, we find that there is a woman who is trapped by the mummy due to the fact that she may or may not be the reincarnation of a woman that the person who became a mummy loved in life. Since the mummy cannot be destroyed using any kind of traditional method, the only way to save the girl is to love her more than the mummy.

This sets up an interesting commentary of the arrogance of modern society. Granted, our science and medicine are greater than any that have been used in the past. This is a fact that could not be argued by any. Does it makes sense, though, to say that we love stronger than they have in the past?

Love at First Sight vs. Ancient Love

In mummy movies, the soul of the female is taken in an incorporeal tug of war between the modern man, and the mummy. That war is won, by the modern man who usually has just met the female character at the beginning of the movie. This makes me wonder if the directors try to get the point across that love at first sight is a stronger type of love than one that has nurtured for thousands of years.

Love as an Occult Power

Of course, most mummy movies are based deeply in the occult. The mummy itself is an occult force who has mystical powers that cannot be explained away by science. The main tool of the main male character is the love that he has for the trapped female. With the overall power of the man's love, it comes across that love grants us occult powers that can rival any in the universe.

Degrading to Women

My last argument about love might turn some readers off to either mummy movies, or me. My last statement about mummy movies is that they can appear as degrading to women by amplifying the thought that women are overly impressionable when it comes to love.

By taking my previous argument about love as an occult power, think about how a woman succumbs to the power of the mummy in mummy movies. The creature loves her, and is able t steal her away. She becomes blind t the world, and only thinks about her new, "master." She spell that she is under is not broken until someone comes by and loves her more. Since this plot scenario appears in just about every mummy movie, isn't it a little demeaning to women to say that love has the most power over them and say that men are able to control women through love?

It bugs me that almost all mummy movies have the same basic plot points...he goes for revenge, recognizes his reincarnated love, etc. At least theys peeded up...as Bill Cosby used to say, anyone caught by Frankenstein or the Mummy deserved to be caught. They were slow.
