Interesting Cooking Classes in New York City

Lauren Romano
In New York City, it is not uncommon to have several takeout restaurants on speed dial or be on a first name basis with the manager of the restaurant down the block. Instead of relying on the cooking talents of others, consider showing off your own cooking skills. Several cooking classes throughout New York City can help you hone your skills and provide you with the confidence to whip out a delicious meal to impress even the most stress inducing guests.

2 Peas and a Pot

If you don't feel like going to a class filled with people you don't know, consider having the class in your own kitchen surrounded by people you love. Lauren and Phil Rubin come to your home and teach you how to prepare an elaborate meal in about four hours. Prices depend on the number of people in attendance. There are several menus to choose from or they are willing to work with you to help you create your own. They also won't throw the items at you and leave you to fend for yourself; they will show you the proper way to go about it.

The Institute of Culinary Education

The number of different classes ICE offers is incredible. Some of the classes include "Essentials of Thai Cooking" and "Tofu on the Table". There are even classes such as "Mid-Summer Night's Feast with Henry IV". You may have difficulty choosing only one class to take at a time. An easy to use search menu breaks down meals by category. Classes run at various times throughout the day and last several hours; prices vary but are quite reasonable, especially considering the level of skill you can walk away with.

Rustico Cooking

One type of food that never seems to get old is pasta. Considering how versatile it is, it can be quite difficult to find someone that doesn't like it. It's easy to cook, takes mere minutes and can satisfy even the most discerning food critics. At Rustico Cooking, there is a cooking class called "The 10 Best Pasta Sauces". In the class you will learn to make ten different pastas with a different sauce pairing. This class can help prepare you with the know-how to make a huge amount of meals for very little money.

Learning how to cook doesn't have to be as difficult as you leaning against the counter with an open recipe book while a burnt meat smell wafts in the air and sauce is splattered all over the wall. Take advantage of the wonderful cooking classes located in New York City. Not only could they help you keep it together when you need to prepare a meal, but you can also be quite impressed with yourself after completing the class.

Loved the article - Rustico and ICE definitely have some of the best classes out there!

    Some additional handy tips:
Many restaurants also offer their own unique cooking classes, like Ristorante DeGrezia, which presents the exciting possibility of sitting down to a great meal today and then learning how to recreate it tomorrow.

The culinary center scene is also worth checking out - for instance, the Whole Foods Culinary Center and the Japanese Culinary Center offer a host of classes, tastings and events.

Finally, don't underestimate the myriad smaller, independent classes, like Camaje, Urban Kitchen, or Butter Lane - often, an intimate setting is the best when it comes to cooking.
