It's that time of year again. The Goblins and Gools are conjuring up their spells of tricks and treats, the kiddies have headed back to school, and routine has begun to set it.

There are many fun and interesting things that have happened and happen in the month of October, in addition there are interesting facts about the month in general.

October is the tenth month on the Gregorian calendar, and one of the months within the year that has 31 days. October has not always the tenth month of the year. It used to be the eight month on the Roman calendar, hence the prefix Oct, meaning eight in Latin.

There are many interesting facts about the month of October in which I think you will find very interesting.

Did you know that every year, October and February end on the same day of the week, and that January starts on the same day of the week, other than leap years?

The month of October has been an inspiration to many. There have been songs and poems written about October. Entire months dedicated to special causes and issues are commemorated in the month of October.

Month long observances during the month of October include, Domestic Violence Awareness Month, American Filipino Month, Breast Cancer Awareness Month, as well as National Arts & Humanities month to name a few. MIT Press Journals publishes a literary by the name of October that "focuses critical attention on the contemporary arts and their various contexts of interpretation: film, painting, music, media, photography, performance, sculpture, and literature."

We know that fall has arrived once the leaves appear in our yard, rather than in the trees. They turn into these magnificent colors of red, orange, and yellow. But did you know that based on the Ireland tradition, autumn does not begin in October, but rather in September and continues until November, sometimes longer?

Many often have the assumption that spring time is the time for gardening, but during my October research-athon I found that many gardening chores begin and take place in October. As the temperature begins to drop, farmers have to reduce the water that they use, they also remove the vegetables that are no longer growing and order new seeds. Planting bulbs and tress is also done in the Month of October. Who would have known, I have always heard about spring gardening, but then again I'm not a gardener, I'm a writer. (Smile)
