Orbit Gum Has an Old, But Shaky History
To show their support in World War II, Wrigley (chewing gum company) shipped all its ever-popular Spearmint, Doublemint and Juicy Fruit gum to the troops overseas. To temporarily fill the void at home, Wrigley came up with another gum. Orbit Gum was made with gum base, sugar, corn syrup, softeners, and artificial fruit flavors. After the war ended in 1946, Orbit Gum was ditched, and Wrigley went back to producing their best sellers.
Orbit Gum Enjoys a Resurgence
Wrigley resurrected Orbit Gum in 1976 when the company launched it in Germany, Switzerland and Holland. It wasn't until 2001 that it was seen again in the United States. An interesting fact about Orbit Gum is, in 2007, it (along with the Wrigley Extra and Eclipse brands), "became the first chewing gum to receive The American Dental Association's Seal of Acceptance." However, Orbit White is not accepted by the ADA.
Keep Your Orbit Gum Away From Your Dog
Today, the ingredients in Orbit Gum includes the natural sugar alcohol xylitol. This sweetener is safe for humans, but it can be deadly to dogs. According to snopes.com, "Just 3 grams of xylitol can kill a 65-pound dog." If your dog gets into your Orbit Gum, OR ANY product that contains xylitol, contact your veterinarian immediately!
Orbit Gum is Gluten Free
If you suffer from Celiac Disease, for example, or are sensitive to wheat, oat, rye or barley gluten, you may still chew Orbit Gum. Neither Orbit Gum or Orbit White gum contains any of these ingredients.
Orbit Gum Is Available in a Ton of Flavors
If you want to try Orbit Gum, but you don't like the Peppermint flavor I prefer, Wrigley has added a list of other flavors, so there's bound to be at least one you'll like. In the United States, you'll find Orbit Gum flavors such as: Spearmint, Bubblemint, Wintermint, Cinnamint, Citrusmint, Crystal Mint, Sweetmint, Mint Mojito, Raspberry Mint, Maui Melon Mint, Fabulous Fruitini, Sangria Fresca, Strawberry Mint and Positively Pomegranate.
Orbit Gum and The Blonde in Their TV Ads
Watch a commercial for Orbit Gum, and you'll see celebrities like model Janice Dickerson and rapper Snoop Dog. The celebrities that appear change, but one name that stays the same in all the Orbit Gum ads is the perky blonde in the 60's-style, white outfit. In case you're wondering, she's an English actress named Vanessa Branch. If you think you recognize her, she played "Giselle" in the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End".
Orbit Gum Moves Up From Loser to Winner
Another interesting fact about Orbit Gum is- once the gum that simply filled in for America's true favorites- it has become the "third-best-selling gum in the United States", according to a New York Times article. Orbit "accounts for a third of Wrigley's domestic profits."

Thanks for the interesting read on Orbit gum. Here are some facts on xylitol you may not know. Over 25 years of testing in widely different conditions confirm that xylitol is the best sweetener for teeth. Xylitol use reduces tooth decay rates both in high-risk groups (high caries prevalence, poor nutrition, and poor oral hygiene) and in low risk groups (low caries incidence using all current prevention recommendations). Sugarfree chewing gums and candies made with xylitol as the principal sweetener have already received official endorsements from six national dental associations.
