From the middle of the plant grows a stem topped with flowers. This is surrounded by about leaves topped with two lobes hinged together at the base. The inside of these lobes are red, possibly to attract insects. It also has stiff sensitive hairs that when triggered, trap insects inside. The enzymes in the plant then dissolve the bug for nutrients. When the lobes are closed, escape is tough because there are rows of alternating cilia on the outer fringes of the lobes that trap it inside. After about a week and a half it opens up again and is ready for the next victim.
Sundew
These carnivorous Sundews have stems that grow out of the plant covered in tentacles. These tentacles are topped with sweet, sticky secretions. Not all types of Sundews have long stems though. All species share this trait: When the insect is attracted to the smell of the secretions that the plant emits, they get trapped in the tentacles. As the bug struggles to get free, it covers itself even more in the substance and are slowly eaten alive. The nutrients are absorbed into the plant. The Sundews with long stalks can bend towards the insect, making sure it can't escape! It grows in swamp environments, and in peat bogs and marshes.
Stink Lily
Picture a white trowel, with curved sides. The small part grows out of the ground. The inside is purple. In the middle of the inside grows a long spike, called a spadix. What is even weirder than the way it looks is the way it smells. It smells like rotting meat, or a dead body! This plant can grow up to five feet in height, so it can attract a lot of bugs.
Jack-in-the-Pulpit
When this plant grows, a set of three leaves emerge. The one in the middle grows into a similar shape of a pitcher, with a hood. The spadix is in the middle. What makes this plant unique is the fact that the middle part of the plant gets stripes on it. It looks like black and white stripes, but upon closer inspection, they are purple or brown stripes. Have you ever seen a striped plant?
Flamingo Flower
The flower of this plant is pink and near the center grows a pink spadix, jutting right out. It is quite an........ unusual looking plant.
Eastern Skunk Cabbage
The leaves grow quite large on this plant, up to a foot and a half long and and the surrounding leaves grow around it like ordinary cabbage leaves. In the center though, grows two leaves mottled purple and white in color. Two leaves join together, curved in shape. If you break the leaves, watch out. A foul smell is emitted from the inside, which smells like a skunk. This is to attract bugs so it can pollinate. It grows in wetlands, like marshes and swamps. This plant can also grow in icy conditions as well, so it is one tough plant.
