Interior Decorating on a Budget

Crystal Sciarini
You don't need to spend thousands, or even hundreds, of dollars to change your homes interior decor. After years of decorating front windows of our family's business I have learned many fun ways to decorate a room on a small budget.

Magnetic Paint
One of my favorite interior decorating materials is magnetic paint. Magnetic paint can be found at hardware stores, paint stores, and craft stores. I prefer to buy my magnetic paint at the craft store where I can use the frequent forty percent off coupons!

Magnetic paint is actually a paint primer that has bits of metal mixed within. Due to the thickness of the magnetic paint one can does not cover more than a few feet and unless you will be using super strong magnets you will need to follow the directions on the can for coverage.

One you have primed the wall with magnetic paint you can cover the ugly gray color with the color of your choice. Darker colors will cover better and will take fewer coats so that you will ensure a better magnetic surface.

The magnetic paint is great for kids rooms, you can turn the entire wall into a play surface! The magnetic paint is also awesome for offices and kitchen message centers. My favorite use though is as a photo center. I have a huge blank wall in my kitchen where the top half is magnetic. All of our precious family memories are displayed on this wall along with fun magnets that we have bought on our journeys. This wall is always the center of attention and much conversation at our dinner parties.

CD Organizers
Cd organizers are so versatile! Whether you are organizing an office or a pantry cd organizers will make cute, fun, and inexpensive storage. My favorite interior decorating project with cd organizers is what I call the zig zag tower.

The zig zag tower can be built with two or more cd organizers. The tower is formed by overlapping three drawer cd organizers on top of each other. The trick is to only overlap two sections and to alternate each side so that the tower has gaps between each section. (See diagram 1) If you will be storing heavy items or building high tower be sure to secure the layers with screws or glue.

CD organizers work great in a pantry for spices and packets of seasoning. Frequently used items can be placed in the open areas between the zigs and zags of the tower to keep them easily accessible. In the kitchen a short tower can be stacked under a cabinet to add extra storage and some color to the area. Use the counter top tower for coffee, tea, and more.
