Interior Decorating Tips and Tricks

Many people say that they do not have the eye for decorating. In most cases it just takes a little push in the right direction to get the creative juices flowing. Take the room in question, give it a once over. What is the first thing that you see that you may want to change? It can be as simple as moving that vase to another corner, adding some pictures or a complete re-arrange. Take a coffee table, place a book on it at an angle, off set a small vase with flowers or some greenery to it. Move the chair to another angle. Then look again, what else do you want to change? Maybe add something from another room. Perhaps a picture you left in the closet because you had no where else to put it at the time. Try to add it to one of your rooms.

The office or den, add a Small round table with a tablecloth and Small warm light on top. Add a couple small pictures, a clock or some other smaller items. This can give a brand new look to any room. Plants also help brighten a room, for those without the green thumb, there are many very nice artificial planters available. One very nice addition to any room would be a corner tall vinyl tree with soft white mini lights attached. This gives off a soft glow to the room in the evening .

Change the drapes maybe from heavy drapes in the winter to a lacy style for the summer. Lace goes well in every room and leaves many options open to pull your color scheme together.

When hanging wall items, whether it be pictures or wreaths, sconces or shelves, move and hold them in many different angles until you see the one that catches your eye. It may take some time, but in the end it is worth it. You don't want to group anything to closely together leaving bare spots. The idea is to create a pleasing to the eye effect. So try staggering some pictures adding a shelf somewhere in between. For instance one picture high and the other to the left and lower, add the shelf to the right and you have a nice grouping.

When I consult with a client, I usually have them write down what they do and do not like. What colors are they not fond of and do they prefer dark colors over light. I do mostly consultations because I have found that most people do know what they are after, they just need to get another idea, so I am honest and tell them what to watch out for. Do they like a clean sharp looking room or one that looks lived in. This helps me guide them to what they are after. Then if they want a complete face lift, we shop for paints, wallpaper, paneling or whatever they decided on. Find the best price and go from there.

The biggest task is finding the objects that they may want to finish the room. Although it can be fun, you want to make sure it is something that will compliment the finished room and the client.

No matter what you decide to do, decorating can be fun and the sky is the limit once you get going. It has and always will be a matter of your own personal taste. Hopefully this will give you an idea as to where you can start.

I absolutely agree with you that the accent pieces that finish a room can be the trickiest part. I've walked into rooms that looked clean and organized but had no personal warmth. Super article here!
