Interior Design: 4 Important Things to Consider When Buying a Sofa

Josienita Borlongan
Everyone knows that a sofa is one of the most expensive ticket items for the home. If you are in the market for a new sofa, there are many challenges that you are faced with. From the design and style choices, and consideration of the price, it can be very intimidating to make a decision without spending enough time researching and trying to find answers to several questions.

When choosing a sofa, there are several key factors to consider. In this article, I shall discuss the four key or most important things to consider when buying a new sofa.

Form and Function:

When you are looking to purchase the right sofa it is important that you consider the balance between style and comfort in your selection. A good example is a modern sofa with clean lines. This type of sofa may be appealing because of its contemporary look and sleek design, but it may not be the right sofa if you are looking for relaxation. Some of these modern or contemporary sofas may not be a good place to relax after a long hard day at work. Consider the cushion profile when considering your next sofa aside from just pure looks. Whether the cushion is an integrated back or loose cushions can have a dramatic effect on how your sofa would sit.

Size:

It is extremely critical to look or consider the overall depth when shopping for a new sofa. If you are someone who likes to read a book while sitting on a sofa, and you'd like to put your feet up when you watch TV, you would need a shallower depth of sofa. You would also need to consider your height and your spouse's height so that both of you are comfortable when you sit down on your new sofa. For example of you are 5'5" and your husband is 6'7", make sure the sofa you choose will be both comfortable for you, whereby it is not too high, and for him, whereby it is not too low. You both have to agree on the right height that both of you can enjoy.

Comfort:

Consider asking a manufacturer or sales rep in finding out how you can better gauge comfort when buying your new sofa. When you buy a custom sofa, you will have the advantage of having more options to choose from. You can look into different foam options available, including their quality, and expected life. You should choose a cushion that is a bit firmer than usual because all foam will get softer after several uses. If your foam is too soft chance are, it will sag and you will find yourself sitting on the frame in a few years.

Fabric Fashions:

When choosing the fabric for your sofa, make sure that it is durable and not prone to staining. Choosing the right fabric can do a lot for your investment. Most people would rather buy new sofas rather than dealing with re-upholstering or cleaning their hard-to-clean sofas because it is cheaper to do so. Everyone knows that by doing so also adds to the expenses. You can avoid this by choosing the best fabric from the start. You may pay more upfront but you will be rewarded by the longer life of your sofa, one that can last more than 5-15 years transposing into more dollars saved down the road by not replacing every so often.

These tips can be very beneficial to consider when you do your research for your next or your new sofa purchase making your hunt more fun and stress-free!
