International Cell Phone Usage May Cause Travel Problems

Assuming that your cell phone will work optimally while traveling internationally is a mistake many travelers make. Even if you have traveled abroad before, the cell phone plan may be different from country to country. A simple phone call to the cell phone carrier ensures that any assumptions about the plan are correct.

Forgoing the call to your cell phone carrier also opens you up to the possibility of returning home to find an extremely high invoice waiting for you in the mailbox. Once the calls have been made on the cell phone, there is nothing you can do to dispute the charges. Arguing that you didn't know the charges would be so high will get you nowhere. The only way to prevent inflated international charges is to prevent them before you travel abroad.

Before leaving for your international trip, research your actual cell phone's capabilities. Not all cell phones perform outside of the country of origin. Before traveling internationally, check with your cell phone carrier to query about the actual phone that you have. You may be able to look up the phone online or research it with the phone's manufacturer, but the best place to get clear answers will be the cell phone carrier. Some models are designed for use all over the world while others only work domestically or locally. Will you get service in the destination country? Will all of the features of the cell phone work internationally?

To avoid exaggerated charges and inflated per minute fees, also look into the international usage plan associated with the cell phone. Will there be additional charges just for using the phone internationally? What are the per minute charges for each location where you will be visiting? Some regions differ by a lot despite the fact that they are just miles apart.

Speaking to someone over the phone isn't always the best way to get correct information. Talk to your cell phone carrier in person by visiting the storefront and take down the representative's name and title. Ask for the rate information and plan on paper, and have the rep highlight the areas that are relevant. If the rep seems unsure, ask to confirm the information with the manager. A call to customer service can verify the information just to be safe.

If the phone and plan you have isn't the best, consider purchasing a pre-paid phone specifically designed for international use.
