International Dating, Mail Order Brides and Russian Women an Emerging Trend

Talk Show Found Majority of Ukrainians Support Practice of Russian Women Marrying Western Men

In an Oct. 28 press release, A Mordinson Introduction, a Ukrainian-based personal matchmaking enterprise, answered some questions about international dating and mail order brides involving Ukrainian women. Mordinson was established in 1999 and is just one of literally hundreds of online international dating or mail order bride Internet sites. Mordinson's website says it is a family owned and operated Russian bride and Russian woman dating site and personalized matchmaking service.

Darya and Michael Mordinson, representing A Mordinson Introduction, appeared Oct. 18 as special guests on a Ukrainian television show, "International Marriages - Salvation or Damnation." The talk show focused on whether most Ukrainians approve of international dating and marriages, if cultural differences strengthened or weakened such marriages and what a relationship between a western man and a Ukrainian woman is like. During the show, the Mordinsons presented data supporting their position that international dating and mail order brides are a reality and generally successful.

During the show, television viewers were able to call in and express their opinions. Although cultural and language differences were major topics during the talk show discussion, 64 percent of those calling into the show were completely supportive of the idea of international dating and mail order brides. Nearly 30 percent of the callers said they didn't think international dating mattered as long as those involved were happy. The remaining 6 percent were against the idea of international dating and mail order brides.

According to International-Internet-Dating.com, an informational web publication, there seems to be a trend emerging among American and Canadian men who prefer to engage in international dating in search of a mail order bride. Sometimes referred to as "the modern method of choosing a wife on line," international dating sites offer a man the opportunity to pick and choose just the right woman - or the woman of his dreams - with "just a few keystrokes." However, regardless of how much a man wants to have a meaningful international relationship, the woman of his dreams will no doubt live half way around the globe. That being the case, experts say, if you don't have the financial means to start and maintain an international relationship, don't start one.

Regarding the claim that some 90 percent of Ukrainians support international dating and marriage, some question why. Why do so many Russian women seek husbands outside their own country? And why is the practice so heavily supported?

According to the Russian Brides Cyber Guide website, many Russian women cannot find a suitable partner in Russia because there are 10 million more women in Russia than men. Further, Russian women want to be married because "this is the necessary condition of success for a woman," the website says.

In terms of language difficulties, Russian Brides Cyber Guide says that English is studied in school for seven years, and it's a compulsory subject at universities and colleges. Most women who apply to dating services can at the very least read and understand English.

There's also the question about the possibility of a mail order bride leaving her American husband after she comes to the U.S. and marries. The Guide says that can happen, but not nearly as often as the media portrays. "The biggest danger of the myths the dating agencies spread is that they make men hope that a young beautiful Russian lady will love an old unattractive American guy just because he lives in a better country and can guarantee her security," says the Guide.

Although language and culture are high on the list of concerns about international dating and mail order brides, that doesn't seem to be a significant factor in terms of a successful international marriage for women from the Ukraine.

Great article. This is a sensitive subject. The possibility of marriage fraud is present even if you have spent years getting to know your fianc(e) though.

With all the online dating going on now, it seems that people are just trying to find love wherever they can. As someone else said, if everyone involved is happy, then why not?

I know of someone who was scammed out of money by a Russian woman. At least that was what she was supposed to be. He wired her money to come to visit him, and also tried to get money for the return trip. He deserved it though! Informative and interesting article.
