Known colloquially as Father Rhine, this river is the longest in Germany. Picturesque cities and stretches of river makes for a wonderful international Valentine's Day travel idea: Romance along the Rhine. There is a little something for everyone.
Romantic Old-World Feel: Ruedesheim am Rhein
Part and parcel of the Rhine Gorge, Ruedesheim is located within the State of Hesse. The picturesque landscape is dominated by old-fashioned cobblestone roads, the river, and wineries. Small and compact, this city exudes the charm that only historical venues possess.
Many hiking opportunities invite the traveler to take some romantic walks near the city and along the Rhine banks. Visit it for the old-world feel, but do not forget the sightseeing opportunities along the river. They include the Niederwald Landscape Park with its famous monument and the infamous Mouse Tower in nearby Bingen. Stay at Breuer's Ruedesheimer Schloss for easy access to all sightseeing opportunities.
Spa and Cathedral: Cologne
Cologne is a major metropolis that hugs the Rhine River from both banks. It is a major fair destination and world-famous for its cathedral. In spite of its flirtation with modern life and futuristic architecture, it has not lost its charm and comfort. Not surprisingly, it attracts international tourists who flock to the area for its proximity to the Rhine and its important architectural marvels. That said, Cologne is also a getaway for the couple in search of a relaxing retreat.
A romantic getaway without equal, Cologne offers the Claudius Therme, which is a Rhine Park spa of the first order. Relax in the sauna, get massages, and spend a day enjoying masterfully crafted meals. Do not forget to visit the cathedral as well -- or just look at it from the spa terrace; it is difficult to miss. Spend the day here, and leave the packed travel itineraries for another time.
Postmodern Culture: Duisburg
North Rhine-Westphalia's Duisburg is unapologetically industrial. While beer aficionados might make the trip for the Koenig Brauerei, it is the postmodern couple with the slightly nihilistic streak that will enjoy the locale the most. The inner harbor is a must-see, as are the botanical gardens.
There is little of the old world here; the highlight of this Valentine's Day outing is the Landschaftspark. This venue is a cultural icon and incorporates unused -- and unusable -- industrial waste with natural influences. Go rock-climbing on old concrete walls; watch nature in ponds made of gas tanks. It is the ultimate romantic destination for the couple for whom modern artistic vision holds great charm.
