International Year of the Potato

Bernadette
Do you know that 2008 will be the International Year of the Potato? We heard about it while watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade on TV. After doing some online research the following are some highlights about the International Year of the Potato and the potato.

Potatoes originated many thousands of years ago in the Andes, a mountain range in South America.

On October 18, 2007, at The United Nations in New York, the International Year of the Potato was officially started.

The official website of the International Year of the Potato (IYP).

Some of the attendees at the event were prominent officials of The United Nations, people in the potato business, including Larry Alsum, Chairman of the U.S. Potato Board and 300 Washington, DC area school children.

Some of what Mr. Alsum spoke about included the commitment that the U.S. Potato Board has to carry on research concerning both the health and nutritional benefits of the potato.

For additional information about potatoes he suggested visiting either www.healthypotato.com or www.potatounderground.com.

Both of these websites offer recipes, nutritional information, and much more.

The IYP exhibit at United Nation headquarters included a great deal of valuable information. Some of what was exhibited included potato plants from Cornell University and details about the nutritional characteristics of the potato.

The celebration of the IYP will among other issues address how the potato can help various worldwide concerns including hunger.

Even a small amount of land can produce lots of potatoes. This is especially important in places where land is not abundant and people are hungry.

The potato must be used to supply wholesome food for both the poor and hungry. The potato is truly valuable, for being both a tasty and nutritious food source.

Some of the nutrients we receive when we eat a potato include Vitamin C, carbohydrates, fiber, and potassium. These are some of the important nutrients that help keep us healthy.

Some people believe that the potato is high in calories, but it is not. An average potato has only about 100 calories.

The following link has an informative and colorful drawing of the potato plant.

The official IYP website has lots of information and facts about the potato. You are given the opportunity to download various potato factsheets in PDF format.

In closing, hopefully, the International Year of the Potato will draw attention to just how important the potato can be in helping to alleviate world hunger.
