Internet Dating: Friend or Foe?

Norah Wason
I am a single woman in New York City. I hear the ratio now is eight women for every one man, and here in New York, half of the men and either gay or on the down low. The are also many beautiful women here as well. So you can imagine how hard it is here to meet people.

I am not into the bar scene or the club scene. I also find the when I meet people at those kind of places, the men there are looking for party girls and that doesn't describe me:( I also tried 8 minute speed dating, it was like an interview every 8 mintes, who needs that???

Well, it seems unless you meet someone on the street, it is time to try the internet.

I started with craigslist, to all you who don't know it, it is a website for everything. In the personal section of the website, they have many different areas, anything from meeting just for sex to looking for the love of your life. I started with strictly platonic, which really isn't;) I met one guy just for a lunch who lived in my area, he was a complete jerk! I then ventured to the relationship section, I never actually met anyone is person, they were just too wierd to even meet.

I, then, went on a site called myspace. I really, actually went on to meet people, I thought is was more of a friendship site, but the men on there are desperate and want to meet you right away. I wonder what makes them so desperate?

The last thing that I tried is yahoo personals. I put a profile on yahoo, but I didn't pay for anything. Yahoo sends you your matches baised on what you are looking for, three times a week. Well, yahoo sent me a profile of the most gorgeous man I have ever seen. So, sent him a flirt note and he sent something back, but in order to communicate further, I had to pay. I asked people's advice and they said go for it.

So he and I were iming for awhile, and I liked him, I started feeling like he was getting attached too quickly. He claimed he was an only child and very close to his mom and he didn't have very many friends, even though he was gorgeous! After a couple weeks of iming, he tells me he is going to London for a model show.

He is in London and e-mails me an article about how he won third place. While he is iming me, he tells me that his mom is at a conference in Nigeria and she has had an accident and ended up in the hospital. He claims to have called Nigeria and found out they want him to send $500 to perfom the surgery. He claimed he could get his check chashed and he had no way to get money.

He then asked me for money. I said I didn't have any. He begged me for help. A few days later he claimed that his mother died and that it was my fault for not helping.

I think I will try meeting people on the street.

He was probably lying. Its just too bad people have to do so much BS before they meet someone they would like to spend some time with. If there is any hope for you its most likely someone you have not met yet or who is right under your nose. I enjoyed your article best of luck to you.
