Internet Explorer 8: How to Turn Off the "Do You Want to View Only the Webpage Content that was Delivered Securely?"

TechTips - How to Get Rid of this Bothersome Windows Message

TechTips
I hate when I get the Windows message "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?" it's annoying and I almost always click yes anyway so why not just turn it off? I have a lot of users who get this message and don't understand it and don't want it to keep prompting them when they open certain pages. So what I will explain is what the message is warning you about, is it safe to turn off the message and how do you turn it off.

First when a user gets this message they are accessing a webpage that is secure (you can tell because the site in the address bar will say https://websitename.com, that S after http means secure) on this secure page there are parts that are not secure but still displayed. The elements that aren't secure aren't encrypted and could be potential security risks if the non-secure parts are areas where data or information can be entered. This leaves these non-secure portions open for attack and if intercepted they can easily be read.

This warning is just making you aware of this risk that if you are entering data on the page some portions might not be secure and could potentially expose sensitive data. So if you click Yes to the question it will block all of the unsecure portions of the page from being displayed, meaning you don't have to worry about the unsecure portions any longer, all data and info will be encrypted on the page. If you click No then you will get all of the content and could possible leave yourself open for attack.

So the repercussions of disabling this message are that you won't be aware of pages that display secure and unsecure content and you won't be able to know which portions are secure and unsecure. You can be risking a lot of sensitive information by disabling the warning message.

So after reading about what the message is telling you and what you are risking by turning this message off if you still want to disable it follow these steps:

Open Internet Explorer

Click Tools

Click Internet Options

Click the security tab

Click Internet Zone

Click Custom Level Button

Scroll down until you see Miscellaneous

Find the option that says Display Mixed Content (It will be set to prompt)

Click Enable (this will stop the message from popping up again)

Click OK

Click OK (this will also apply the setting, so you don't have to hit apply first)

Go to the site that caused the prompt before (it shouldn't prompt you again)

Well that is all there is to disabling the message "Do you want to view only the webpage content that was delivered securely?" in Internet Explorer 8. Pretty quick and simple solution to this annoying message. Remember that there can be consequences to turning this off and you should only turn it off if you know that it won't be a problem for you or your users. Hope this guide helps!
