Internet Profile Etiquette

Kasey Lane
Once upon a time not so long ago, people became acquainted face-to-face. These days, almost anyone can be found in cyberspace. This ever changing world has given birth to the internet and a host of side effects not commonly known, but experienced by many. Wether keeping in touch with family or friends, networking, promoting, dating, gaming, etc., a profile is often the main focus for many social websites. Profiles are self-created informational pages about the owner and your profile may be revealing more about you than once thought. Often used for quick introductions and reference, internet social experiences can be rewarding, but take another look from a different angle to avoid undesirable perceptions.

• • • Profile Picture is usually the first thing anyone notices about you. Can your face be seen clearly? What are you doing in the photo? Would you let your Mother see it?... because she probably will.

• • • Personal Bio is your description of yourself. The tone this is written in will give viewers a glimpse of your attitude and self confidence, or lack thereof. Is your bio too long or outrageous? Really? Did you leave anything to mystery?

• • • Your Photos will serve to be the most revealing of details about you, and the backgrounds behind you. Are you consuming an alcoholic beverage in more than a couple of pictures? Hmmmmm. How are you dressed classy, or not? Did you leave anything to mystery?

• • • Your Friends on the site can unveil information about the kinds of choices that you may or may not make. Does your list of friends conflict with what your biography states? What kind of comments are they leaving behind? What are they doing in their profile pictures?

• • • Login and Post Info may be updated each time you visit. Are you always on the site? Have you logged in at least within the last year? Did you forget about an existing account and what may be on it?

• • • Your Blogs are the obvious source for your opinions. Everybody has one, but just how offensive might yours be? Can you express yourself in an articulate way or rather, do you carry on like a child?

These are questions you should ask yourself before posting for the World Wide Web to see. Family, employers, friends, enemies, exes, and potential love interests may be watching. Your profile is your psesentation to the world, not an application for disaster.
