Internet Sites for Hard to Find Books

Susan Pettrone
I have had cause to search recently for some text books. So thinking ahead for the summer I decided to share what I have found. One of the best places for these kinds of books I have found is Alibris.com http://www.alibris.com/

Alibris.com is a site which I have found to be a great resource for books that are out of print or "gently used" books. In fact in the past I have found Alibris is quick to ship and their prices are actually quite reasonable as well. In regards to finding books that might be out of print or from smaller publishing houses, I have found over 90% of all the books I have searched for on this site, and at reasonable prices as well. Shipping is fairly quick and reasonable as well, and if one is diligent, discounts can be found to apply to purchases from time to time.

Bibliofind which is an offshoot of Amazon.com) http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/books/misc/bibliofind.html/102-8774209-1714505 has a very easy to use search page and in fact when I searched for a book I have been looking for it came up with literally 3500 entries from my search words! It is an extremely easy site to use and one that I find myself returning to time and time again. It is definitely worth a look or two to see if it does in fact have what you are searching for in way of reading material.

http://a-albionic.com/search.html is another site that promises to find rare books but as I've not used it as of yet, I can't honestly vouch for it's claims or customer service. I have gone through much of the purchase walk through many times but have always ended up using a tried and true site instead. It doesn't exactly gain my trust in the appearance of the site, which is my opinion of course. You'll have to check it out firsthand to see if it is in fact the site for you.

http://www.alpinenterprises.com/bookdat/formwrite.html
is a link where shoppers can directly search for a book and they promise to contact you as soon as they locate it. I have had mixed feelings with this site. On one occasion they got back to me within mere days with information about a book but the next time I tried while searching for what I knew was a fairly easy to find book, I never did hear back from this site. Thus my confidence is shakey at best with them and I honestly can say that I don't intend to do business with them at this time.

Books a million.com
http://www.booksamillion.com/ncom/books/books?raresearch=1?id=
also has an area to search for your book and when I searched I found more than a dozen examples of the book I was searching for with just one click. Books a million is one of those sites that rolls off the tongue quite nicely and has a nice reputation to boot. It definitely is one that I would trust with my credit card or paypal info an be sure they would in fact deliver the goods as promised.

So to make a long story short, if you are looking for a hard to find book you can't find at B&N or BORDERS, here are a few places to check out.Though I have not used everyone of the above mentioned sites with equal frequenty, I can say that I have honestly checked them each out and am confident in my opinions stated above. But as you know, whenever you spend money, it has to be each persons individual decision. I just hope the notes above help in your search for the elusive "best read ever"!
