Internet Slang: Emoticons, Acronyms and More

Bridgette Gilchrist
I have received many e-mails and read so many articles these days that have these weird abbreviations for words and phrases, and I am brave enough to announce to the world that I have absolutely no idea what they mean. I went on a hunt to find how to interpret the slangs such as "LOL" and "BRB" and can now actually read an article with a little more accuracy. This article is for people out there like me, who want to be in the loop when communicating on line and are tired of feeling "slang illiterate". I'm sure there are many, many more abbreviations out there but here is a list of the most common.

Now, there are also all of these emotions you can convey as well. I use a few such as a smiley face :) or a frown :(, but other than that, I had no clue as to all the other emotions you can convey in an e-mail. Apparently, some people can get the wrong idea of your emotion and you want to be absolutely certain they know you are joking, being mean, feeling sad or are just completely disgusted. In order for you to be very clear on your feelings, you want to be emotion savvy. Here is a list for your use.

:-) or :) or :o) = happy
:-( or :( = sad
:`-( or :`( = crying
;-) or ;) = winking
:-$ = tight lipped
:-D = big smile
:-O = shouting
:-/ = frustrated or a sigh
:-* = kiss
:-| = disgusted
!%#$&!#$& = cursing
:-P = pfffftttttt!
>:-( = anger/annoyed
o:-) or o:) = an angel
8-) = glasses
{{ }} = hugs
{{Bridgette}} = hugs for Bridgette
----,--'--@ = a rose; you can even color roses to mean different things. Bright pink = passion; White = innocence, purity, silence, secrecy

So there you have it! You are now educated on Internet slang. Try using it on one of your friends. They'll be very impressed. ;)

You're right, there is a learning curve to the language in Cyber World. I was proud with myself for knowing the vast majority of these! :-) But while I was still trying to pick them up, I had to analyze context a lot, and what the acronym could appropriately possibly mean in that situation...I only had to ask a friend of mine who is a little more cyber-worldy than me a few times... ;-) Thx for the lesson - I'm sure it will help someone!!!
