Whenever I see people trotting along at 5 mph on a treadmill for 45 minutes, I want to burry my face into my palm. Steady state cardio is a waste of time. Don't get me wrong, exercise is exercise, and if that's what you like to do, then by all means, go right ahead. I say it's a waste of time because you have to do it for so long to get the same results you could achieve in a fraction of the time doing something else.
If you want to lose fat rapidly, sprinting is the way to do it. The logic is really simple: The more intense an exercise is, the more calories it will burn, period; and sprinting is the most intense cardiovascular exercise there is. I can't think of another exercise that will wear you out as quickly as sprinting.
Think about it this way: You can probably walk for an indefinite amount of time before getting tired; you can probably jog for a good 30 to 45 minutes before needing to rest; and you can probably run at a decent pace for anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes before losing steam. But, how long do you think you can sprint? I'm talking all-out running as fast as you can. Maybe two minutes? Maybe one minute?
This is why interval sprinting is the way to go for rapid fat loss. It hardly takes any time at all, and in only 20 minutes you can burn up to three times as many calories as walking for one hour. Not only that, but you'll continue to burn calories at an accelerated rate for several hours after you stop. So, what is interval sprinting? It's easy…
This is how it works: Find an open area where you can run for 50 to 100 meters - you can also do this on a treadmill, but I don't recommend it. Now, sprint for 50 to 100 meters, then walk or jog back to your starting point and repeat. You only have to do this about 10 times to get a complete workout. Each interval will probably take you one to tow minutes to complete, so if you do 10 intervals, your whole workout will take you 10 to 20 minutes.
That's it. It's really that simple. Now, can you understand why I want to face-palm every time I see someone wasting so much time trying to lose fat on a treadmill? Here's another way you can look at: You can jog at a steady pace of 4 mph to 6 mph for 45 to 60 minutes, five days a week; or, you can sprint for 20 minutes three days a week and burn more calories, burn more fat and build more muscle. I think it's an easy choice.
