A Tale of a Native American Boy Taking the Path of a Man

Cathy Law-Pierce
Date of Interview: May 14, 2008
This book hits very close to home for me. Not only because the book is set in Rural Oklahoma, but the author happens to be my future mother in law, Cathy Law-Pierce.

Cathy takes great pride in everything she writes, and not only does she dedicate herself to writing, but she puts a part of her soul into everything she writes! This is Cathy's first published book, hopefully one of many to come. I had a chance to sit down with Cathy a few days ago, and asked her about her inspirations for the book, and what she hopes everyone will learn from it.So without further adieux, the interview I had with Cathy about "Buffalo Brother"

Was there any family inspiration to your book?

"Yes, there was a family legend about us being part Cherokee, so I was always fascinated with all the tribes. Ive also borrowed a name here and there from my family."

How long did it take you to write the book?

"Six months of reading everything I could find on Native Americans, then it took me Six months to write it out by hand completely. I didn't have access to a computer, nor word processor back then... so It did take me right at a year...chapter by chapter I would hand them over to my son and husband to read, they anxiously awaited each chapter."

What is one thing you hope readers will take away from this book?

"To believe in todays teenagers, let them be themselves, but love them as they each are so very unique! There is also a beauty in the Kiowa traditions that stuck with me on everything I read about them. I hope every Kiowa teenager will give it a chance. They may learn something about themselves... well any teenager for that matter, is going to relate to at least one of the characters."

In one word, how would you describe your work "Buffalo Brother?"

Exciting

Will there be a sequel to this book?

"I'm not sure yet... there is room for a sequel with the main characters younger brother who grows up involved in the traditional ways. There are several ideas I thought about for a sequel, so yes, it could very well have one someday."

Will there be any book signing tours in the future?

"Nothing is planned yet, Ive just launched the book on lulu.com several months back , bur I would love to get it in the hands of a serious publisher who is willing to take a chance on an unknown author."

What are you currently working on? When will it be released?

"I'm approximately halfway finished with my 2nd book, "The Unnoticed", which comes from volunteer work I did as a pedophile hunter online, and there is also a poetry/ photo book in the works."

Do you have any advice for future authors?

"Believe in yourself , be brave and bold about your writing, there is a river of words floating unseen above our heads, and its just a matter of putting the right ones together. It is up to new writers like us to bring new things to the world, if you have the gift, use it!"

Who is your favorite Author?

Shakespeare, I love his comedies and have laughed myself silly reading some of his insults in them!

Is your book in bookstores, through an online store?

"Currently Its available online only, although Ive sold a few to the hometown folks."

What Kind of reactions are you getting from your readers?

"They are all saying 'This would make a great movie'... then begin talking about the characters like they were living people. After having those characters in my head for so long, I feel they are a part of me. So the unanimous feedback I'm getting is all in my favor."

If you would like a copy of her book, it available in digital form, paperback, and hard copy at lulu.com, exclusively.
