Interview with a Counterperson

Ginny Gray
Burger King Employee
Date of Interview: 1990
Kalamazoo has a large Burger Shack which is a pleasant place to buy a cup of coffee or burger and fries and sit quietly enjoying. I've been to one several times recently.

There's a young woman who works there that's about nineteen. She's small boned and slender;about 5'5" in height. Her hair is thick, long, wavy and brunette. The first time I saw her she wore it in a braided ponytail under her head cap which is part of her work uniform. She wears a purple shirt with a black collar and black work trousers. To complete the work uniform she wears black laced low heeled shoes for comfort and appearance. Shes on her feet all day.

I observe her from my table which is located in front of the counter about twenty feet from it.

She smiled at me when I glanced at her. She has a curved, shapely, generous mouth. A warmly spontaneous smile. Unlike my skin which is pink tinged and faintly freckled she has smooth, even toned skin with undertones darker than mine. Her face is oval in shape, with brown eyes fringed by dark thick eyelashes, eyelashes I envy. She has a medium sized nose with a bridge that is higher than an orientals. Her ears are delicate, and evenly spaced near her head. She is a cog in the work team, a smooth and efficient one. Altogether, there are about ten in the team involved in the production and serving of the meals as well as the cleanup and maintenance of the place.

I believe she is an American of French extraction.

Sally kept busy the whole time I was there. Either she was washing down the counter, stacking paper coffee cups, sweeping the floor, wiping down tables or working in the food preparation area. She didn't waste anytime.

Today, I returned to the Burger Shack and was glad to see Sally working hard as usual. She smiled when she saw me. I guess my face is becoming familiar to her.

She speaks French. Most of the employees are French. From where, I do not know. I don't know if she speaks English yet. She doesn't wait on customers or take orders, so, possibly she does not.

I noticed her speaking and then laughing while she was talking with another employee. Her whole face lit up when she laughed. Her laugh was pleasant and melodious. She likes people, I can tell by her reactions to others. She is neither over friendly nor cold natured. Her lack of ostentatious behavior is pleasant to see in an age when women have become too aggressive. She is non aggressive, yet efficient in her movements. Her face is cool, calm and pleasant.

I feel at home here, welcome yet not overwhelmed by attention.
