Interview with Jav'lin, Hip Hop Artist
"Walk with Me", Written for Kenneth Foster Jr. On Texas Death Row
I'm a European female musician who has been I've been strongly active in activism against the death penalty for about 2 and a half years now. I lived in Europe most of my life but because of my job I am blessed get to travel the world. I have a twin sister, and also a little sister and a brother we have the same father not the same mother.
2. How long have you been in the music business, and what style does your music fall under?
I have been in music for about 7 years and I make hip hop music.
3. Who are the band members, musicians accompanying your singing?
I am a solo artist. Sometimes I perform with Shafally, she is a close friend and talented R&B singer.
4. Where are some of the places you have performed? And what upcoming shows do you have scheduled?
I have performed from San Antonio, TX to Amsterdam, The Netherlands. I am currently touring in the Netherlands. I have shows for next year planned in Nairobi, Africa. I have no tour dates and locations at hand but you could find them on my website. www.Javlin.nl
5. What singers, bands, musicians have influenced you most?
I love to listen to old school jazz and soul. I listen to hip[ hop but not all the time. I like to listen to music with a message. I like music from Tupac to Billy Holliday. Both influenced me big time. Sometimes I even listen to country music. To me the message in the music makes it good or bad music. It doesn't matter much what genre it is really. A good song is a good song (to me) when it speaks to my soul.
6. What do you feel are the ups and downs of being a performer?
The biggest up is that you get to meet lots of people and you get to go places you might have never went. The down is that you get payed in periods of time and when you are up and coming that can really be hard. You have times where you make no money at all in the beginning. It can also be hard because you are always on the road and you hardly get time to spend with friends and family and not everyone can be understanding about that.
7. Your song "Walk With Me," was written for your husband who is now on death row in Texas. Could you tell us about the song and video, and your views on his situation?
The song I wrote shortly after I met him. When we had just fallen in love. I did the song for him, because he loves music just as much as I do and I wanted to speak to him in a way no other ever did. recently after another appeal was denied I decided to do the video, music speaks to people and I figured that this was the fastest way to get his story out to the rest of the world. For him to be sentenced not as a killer but a co-defendant and to get sent to death row for it, I think is wrong. He shouldn't be on death row and I believe in his innocence not 100 but 200 percent. I think that, after doing the time in jail he did, he should now be set free and given the chance to rebuild his life.
8. What are your goals and aspirations for the future?
I want people to hear me, people to hear what I speak on. My husband inspired me to get into the music business the way I am now. So I bring stories people can relate to. I just hope that I can continue to do that, maybe even more than how I'm doing it now.
9. Can you provide us with links that the readers can read more about you, or purchase your music?
