I purchased this motorcycle after putting over 12,000 miles on my previous bike, a 2008 Honda Rebel 250cc. I have been riding solid now for just about 2 years. I highly recommend the Rebel 250 if you have absolutely no riding experience as your first bike. If you have played around on some motorcycles or have taken the Motorcycle safety courses and understand the physics of motorcycles, the new Yamaha FZ6R can make an excellent beginner bike also, if you can respect it.
The FZ6R has a tighter rider triangle and more user friendly riding position. The handle bars are more upright and closer to the rider. There is no need to lie over the gas tank unless you want to. The bars are also adjustable to give you that perfect riding position.
The seat is adjustable for 2 positions also. I am 5'11" and have no problem flat footing it while sitting on the bike in the seats lowest position. I also experience no cramps in my legs in this position. If you are taller, you can easily raise the seat to accommodate you.
Having the riding position the way it is, the FZ6R makes for an excellent commuter motorcycle. I commute 110 miles a day on this motorcycle and do not experience any pain in my back, shoulders, or legs. It really is that comfortable. Newer users will find this as a big plus. This will allow you to get a better feel for the motorcycle and its handling characteristics.
Don't think that Yamaha gave up any looks to have this more user friendly riding position. This bike screams sport bike! With very aggressive lines and different graphics patterns depending on which color you get, no one will mistake you for anything else. There are four colors to choose from for 2009: black, yellow, blue, and white. Each has a different graphics pattern.
The FZ6R is sporting a liquid-cooled DOHC 600cc inline-4 cylinder engine with a 6 speed transmission. You will have no problems controlling this power as long as you respect the motorcycle and your own skills. Power is tuned to be more in the low to mid-range area. You can give the motorcycle a steady dose of throttle and it is very smooth. There is no need to redline the RPMs to create power. Gas mileage is calculated to average around 43mpg. Depending on how you ride, this of course can vary.
With a single rear 5.1- in travel shock, you have 7 levels of adjustment. A simple spanner wrench will adjust the firmness or softness of the ride. 1 being the softest and 7 being the firmest. I weigh around 200 pounds and find that the shock setting of 5 works best for me. The motorcycle handles great in the turns and on the straight away.
You won't find the new FZ6R breaking your wallet either. With a price tag right about $7,000 it's a very affordable way to gain entry into the sport bike world.
Yamaha may have created one of the best entry level sport bikes yet. But don't let that fool you if you are a more experience rider. The FZ6R can be appreciated by riders of any experience. If you are looking at sport bikes, definitely take a look at the all new 2009 Yamaha FZ6R. Sit on one and see for yourself.
