Inured

Thomas Cleveland Lane
It is a blessing, when you stop to think;
our bodies acclimate to searing heat
to help us function in the summer's sun
and let us soon enough become inured.

Still, there always is a price to pay,
although we soon get comfortable and used
to living 'neath the hot and blazing sun.
We all too soon become inured as well
to the glory of all nature in full bloom;

To the taste of lemon water-ice
and sports that only happen in the heat;
to a picnic, every now and then,
and time to do the thing that is not work.

Too late, as leaves begin to fade and fall,
we learn again what we let pass us by
and brace ourselves for short and barren days.
