After some consideration about what I enjoyed as a child, one of the things that came up was a back yard carnival. It took some creative parenting and a lot of help from the kids to build the carnival games we wanted. Single motherhood does not allow much of a budget for entertainment.
Pretty soon we were all having the best time building carnival games using tin cans, balls, and cardboard boxes. This wasn't parenting, this was fun! We used rubber ducks and a swimming pool for a duck pond game. A folded piece of cardboard with holes became a carnival bean bag toss. Motherhood means using imagination rather than money sometimes.
The kids are grown now and this carnival has become my favorite memory of parenting and motherhood. Turns out, it's theirs too. Just the other day my grown daughter was talking about that day and how much fun we had. Turns out she and her kids did the same thing one day when there was nothing to do. Knowing parenting and motherhood skills are being passed on is so special!
