Take care of your choice, have a wider scope and look to the future, you may choose a small koi with a certain color pattern assuming it will keep looking like this when it grows up, which is not the case, cause some dots in the pattern wouldn't grow with the fish, so it ends up to another pattern of color from the one you chose and consequently this will be the color pattern inherited by the offspring, also, take care of the cleanliness of the bloodlines of the koi too, so that to have the first rate offspring kois.
There are over hundred types of kois registered all over the world and specially in Japan, as the koi is originally coming form Japan but now breeding every where all over the world, So, you have a large variety of choices for your koi, basically these types are varying according to the koi color patterns. Base color for the koi is black and white with some mixed colors to them, and sometimes the koi is of a single color.
Koi age has a big influence on breeding of koi, too young or too old koi wouldn't give the required results; the age between 4 to 5 years would be the one giving perfect spawning and breeding.
"What else should I keep in mind for a quality koi reproducing? Isn't it enough choosing a good quality parent for a quality offspring" someone would wonder, and of course it is not enough, other fatal reasons would affect the growing of koi and it's health and consequently it's reproducing, like the pond design, the water freshness and sufficiency. The breeding it self has a certain time of the year and temperature. Breeding time is usually in between spring and summer.
When a female koi is mature enough, this has signs in it's shape and when these signs are seen their breeder should introduce 2 male kois to this female koi in a separate pond for breeding, expect an unpleasant odor out of the breeding pond afterwards. The female koi then lays thousands of eggs; half of them will only survive till being adult koi. These eggs have to be separated from parent koi so that they are not eaten by them.
Breeding is not that difficult but it needs a lot of knowledge and good applying to the professional guiding, things would go well and you would earn thousands of dollars from this business, it is really profitable, especially quality, beautiful ones of koi, would really be required by a lot of buyers if you were smart enough to make their color pattern meeting the required standard by tasty koi fans.
