Investigating the Paranormal Activity at Weary Road Wisconsin

Where We Ran into Something We Were Not Prepared to See

Jennifer N.
Weary Road, located near Evansville in Wisconsin has a history of haunting and a reputation of one of the most haunted places in the state (or so a post on a paranormal forum claims.) Haunting or no, there certainly are several legends of the haunting, the activity, and the cause of the activity. We decided to look around for ourselves.

The Legends and Lore

The legends are as varied as they are numerous. Among them are that a kid was car surfing and died on the bridge.

Another of the varied stories was that there was a family that lived on this road by the name of Weary. The mother supposedly disappeared. As a result of the mother's disappearance the father became a friend of the bottle and a bit of a recluse refusing to speak to anyone. There was a fire at the house, the seven children were inside and perished. The father was nowhere to be found. The mother returned (from wherever it was that she'd run to) and was unaware of what had happened. When she saw the house she hung herself in one of the trees that stretch across Weary Road. A Road Guide To Haunted Locations (the Wisconsin edition) has several legends that involve this family and many different renditions of the circumstances surrounding them and the activity on the road.

Chad Lewis and Terry Fisk report that the majority of these legends have been proven to be false. So, why Weary Road is said to be haunted, and why people experience odd things there still appears to be a mystery.

A forum claims that Weary Road is one of the most haunted places in the state. (Side note here, I have not found any other information backing up this reference to Weary Road.)

What People Have Reported Seeing There

A friend of ours who resides in the region of Weary Road has reported that he and his friends all saw a hell hound near the trees. This happened on the second visit there and was witnessed by multiple people in the group that night.

Posts on a forum report that there were sightings of a man, a barricade of raccoons (yeah, I know,) that would not move until shooed away. Other posts yet on this came forum say bodies hanging from the trees, and ghostly little girls have been spied on the side of the road.

Another site yet reports there are odd lights, phantom trains, cars and other vehicles, and imps that hide in the trees. (This site also has another of the legends surrounding the Weary family's fate listed.)

It's said that if you park your car on the bridge it will not restart again. It's also said that nothing happens until you make your third visit to Weary Road. (However, as stated earlier a friend tells us that he saw a hell hound on the second trip there.)

Our Investigation

We went to Weary Road last Friday. We arrived with plenty of daylight to aid us in looking around, finding the place and getting out of there. We noticed some beavers and ducks in the polluted water that runs along the majority of the road. We also noticed that the road sign was missing on the corner where we needed to turn onto the road. (A classic problem when looking for many haunted spots.)

We drove down the road and pulled off just short of crossing the bridge. We got out and looked around. I took Gideon and took some photos while Clint looked around and jotted down notes in his notebook.

I wasn't sure why, but I felt a draw to this one tree in particular and I wound up taking several shots of it. (I did not at this time know about the stories of the hanging bodies or that the mother was said to have hanged herself on one of those trees.)

We noticed a number of disturbing things at this location. The first of which was a spray painted pentagram on the foot of the bridge. The second thing I noticed was the bodies of two cats, one of which was black, in a ditch not far at all from the bridge. At this point I wanted to get out of there. I didn't like the vibes I was getting and went back to tell Clint of the findings. When I got back to the car I saw the word REDRUM spray painted on the sign that we had parked next to. Up until this point we had not seen it. The sign is located in a position where when you drive across the bridge that the word would then spell murder in your car mirrors.

Naturally, we didn't dare drive across the bridge, but we did walk on it a bit to get a closer look at the trees on the other side. Gideon found some money on the bridge and wanted to take it back. We, however thought this might not be such a good idea and left it behind and instead handed him the money from our pockets.

I went with Gideon and sat in the car. We had been having a discussion about "good" roads and "bad" roads in the car since there were some really odd roads on the way out there. So, I asked Gideon is this a good road or a bad road. He replied it was good. He also said he liked it there. Well, that made one of us. Both Clint and I had bad vibes and we got out of there as soon as possible. We have done ghost hunting for a number of years and had never encountered so many disturbing signs at any of the locations.

What did we see that was out of the ordinary?

Not much, really. Aside from the beavers running up and down the road, the disturbing signs and the cats that is. We didn't see any hell hounds, ghostly girls, phantom vehicles nor bodies or imps in the trees. Then again, that's not surprising since the legend claims that nothing will happen until the third visit. Our friend (the one who reported seeing a hell hound here) tells us that he might go back a third time. We, however will not be tempting fate and going back again.

Car Troubles

The following day after our trip, my husband had troubles starting the car up to go on a routine trip to the store. Again on Monday on the way to work the car gave him issues starting. Was this connected to the lore and our trip to Weary Road, or was it a simple coincidence? You can decide that for yourself, or if you wish (and are brave enough,) you can try your own luck at Weary Road.

I lived in Webster, WI when growing up. We had stories of a "White Woman." people driving at night would see this woman, dressed in white, standing alongside the road, looking like she needed a ride but when they backed up to help her, she was gone. Scared the you know what out of everyone.

just went out to weary rd. with 2 of my best friends, and for lack of a better term me and 1 of my other friends decided to urinate of the 2 sides of the bridge right after i finished i heard a weird screech, but i thought nothing of it because it was quiet and me and the driver were the only ones that heard it about 5 seconds later the screech came back a good 10x louder we freaked out and jumped in the car and drove further towards the randomly ending river, while also trying to debunk it as a raccoon, and to clear up the supposed hell hounds its probably the dog about a farm down that chases any car driving passed it, well except this time when it stood completely still not even looking at our car as it drove by.

i have one picture from weary road that i cannot explain. after being there for about an hour we got back to the foot bridge and my brother decided that he was going to, sorry about the vulger in this but urinate off the bridge and as he was i got a picture of an orb right to the side of the bridge where the huge bush is. then i got this deathly cold feeling. then we decided to leave and as we were driving away i had looked at the photo that was just taken for the first time and saw that and thought that mabey that deathly cold feeling had something to do with the picture that had been taken. Also i have always heard and read that you are not supposed to anger spirits or ghosts whichever you want to call them but either way i feel that my brother angered one.

Forgot to note that when we were trying to leave a big truck tried to make us drive off the road. We ended up having to drive off the road or we'd crash head on to the truck. That's when the dogs attacked and surrounded our car barking. And when we were just getting onto the road in the beginning there was a car maybe 100 ft behind us. No turns on this road whatsoever. My friend said just wait it will dissapear randomly. I was like yeah right. It dissapeared. The car lights weren't shining anymore and you couldn't see anything there. Ehh :/
