While we were there, we saw a man walking from the scene with a handful of the crop's wheat. Jokingly my stepfather said he was taking home a souvenir. Come to find out he was a paranormal investigator who was taking it to analyze the crop for signs of alien life. I'm unsure exactly how he planned to do this, but he mentioned something about a radiation or some similar chemical he would look for.
He seemed a friendly sort of guy, talkative, as was his female partner. I cannot remember exactly how it came up, but he began telling us about this place called Dudlytown in Connecticut. Touting it as the most haunted place they had ever been to. We, of course, as amateur ghost hunters perked up with interest. We'd never heard of this place and we wanted to know more, if they were willing to share.
They shared photos from their trip there, photos depicting, mists, eyes in the trees etc. We were intrigued, as our family (yes, I said family) enjoyed seeking out haunted places and going to the ones we could get to (thus my long list and many years ghost hunting.)
They went on to tell us some of the phenomenon they experienced while there. They had seen mists in photos, eyes in the tree tops, they were even poked by unseen hands. One woman in their group was slapped so hard her face welled up. Another left in an ambulance for heart issues. How much of this was true or affected by outside circumstances is unknown. Also unknown is their credentials and credibility. They said that the ruins of the now ghost town lay deep in the woods and you'd only see walls and foundations left from what once was a town. We were instructed to not take anything from the area as it's reported that you would have bad luck. Also we were instructed to go in without a negative attitude.
With all of this in mind we decided to take a look into the place for ourselves. Connecticut was a days drive from New York where we lived at the time, so we set out to locate the ghost town. By the time we arrived in the area where we needed to be it was far too dark to venture into foreign wooded territory. So, not wanting to turn around empty handed we did the only thing we could. We stopped at a motel and stayed the night - with only enough supplies for a day trip out.
The following day we set out for the woods (I will not name the location of the woods or their name since it is now illegal to visit the grounds.) We knew we were in the right spot when posted signs listed the forest name at the bottom. We walked in a ways finding little in the way of what we were seeking. We, however were told we needed to hike in a ways to find it. Somehow we located a side entrance to the woods on another road. At the time the road was called Dudleytown road. We were told by a resident that the name was to be changed soon (this was many years ago - more than ten years ago) and she quickly added that "There's no ghosts there." It seemed like so many other towns with haunted areas, they didn't like people around there and tried to discourage people looking around. We walked in anyway. We soon saw foundations and walls and presumed this was once the town that we were in search for. We snapped several photos of tree tops, the forest, walls and foundations in hopes our photos would at least partially resemble the ones the man at the crop circle had shown us.
We found nothing terribly unusual in our photos. A few were a bit hazy, but in a forest that could be pretty mundane with to tree tops covering a lot of the sunlight. Our tree tops showed no eyes. Our photos showed no unexplained mists. We were not poked or slapped by unseen hands. We heard no voices other than our own.
Whatever might still reside in Dudleytown apparently wasn't willing to make itself know to us.. even still it was an interesting trip, and one I won't forget.
REMEMBER: This is now closed to the public. You cannot investigate or enter Dudleytown or the woods. You will be arrested if you attempt to. This information is courtesy of the Legend of Dudleytown site. Please respect the town's law and wishes and do NOT trespass. To read more about this click here.
If you'd like to read more on Dudleytown grab a copy of Arthur Meyer's A Ghosthunter's Guide. There's a lengthy article about the history of the town and how it's thought that it was cursed from the day they settled there. For more information on the town now and then check out the Legend Of Dudleytown website. It's a must see. Sadly, I was unaware of this site (or it did not exist) when we visited, but I was aware of the entry in Arthur's book.
The Legend of Dudleytown site reports that there's a movie in the works and slated for a tentitive 2007 release about the ghost town!
