Investments Through Roth IRA

John P Cummings
Roth IRA (Individual Retirement Accounts) investments are one of the best methods to allow individuals to save for their own retirement. Roth IRA investments offer an unparalleled ability to grow your nest egg, tax free, over long periods of time. Because Roth IRAs offer the exceptional ability to utilize compound interest and long investing horizons, they can be a powerful weapon in helping you achieve early retirement, financial independence, or whatever your financial goals are. We'll look at some of the rules and nuances of Roth IRAs to help you in your financial goals.

Roth IRAs are retirement accounts that are maintained by financial institutions, but are set up and managed entirely by you, the investor. These accounts can contain any number of investments, and can contain stocks, bonds, CDs, or mutual funds, and can even include real estate or precious metals. It's up to you, the investor to decide what level of risk you wish to assume, and what type of assets you wish to contribute to your Roth IRA.

As mentioned, you can select any type of investment you want in your Roth IRA, but you can only contribute up to $5,000 per year (this is the maximum contribution for 2009), and you must contribute cash. If you have appreciated property (stocks, mutual funds, real estate) you won't be able to contribute it directly to the Roth IRA, even if the basis (the cost you paid for it) is less than $5,000.

So you've decided that you want to start your own Roth IRA. Well if you're ready to start one, it can be done at just about any bank, online or traditional brokerage firm, or mutual fund company. Make sure that you search around for the most cost effective place to house your Roth IRA as many companies will charge maintenance fees or transaction costs to purchase stocks or mutual funds. If you do decide that you want your Roth IRA investments to include unusual financial vehicles such as real estate, gold, or old silver dollar coins, you may need to find a specialized company to handle your request.

Investing through a Roth IRA can be a great way to save for your future, and the power of long term, tax free savings can help you meet any financial goal you may have. Keep in mind the items mentioned here, and as with any financial issue, you should consult with your financial advisor, tax accountant, CPA, IRS, or state taxing authority to make certain that you are in compliance with all rules and regulations.
