You can do a lot of things wrong on the Iowa Hawkeye football team. You can miss a pass, drop a ball or miss an extra point and fans will grumble at you and be cheering you the next play. Iowa fans have always been quick to react and even quicker to forgive. Things that Iowa football teams cannot do with continued support from fans are the following: You can't do drugs. You can't deal drugs. You can't be a party animal off the field and play poorly. You can't talk and act as if you are beaten, this includes coaches. Coaches are cut slack until they are perceived to be covering up or making light of problems on the team. You can't disgrace the Iowa program, the school, the other members of the team or the Iowa fans without some kind of major backlash.
This brings us back to Darrell Johnson-Koulianos. His drug arrest broke several of the fan's rules for players. Then there's running back Adam Robinson. Ferentz said in a prepared statement. "We wish him the best of success in the future. While Adam has been cleared medically, he will not be participating in the upcoming Insight Bowl game as a result of failing to comply with team expectations and policies. Adam will have the option to rejoin the team when classes resume in January." And finally add Hampton's departure and you have fans scratching their heads.
Iowa doesn't have a pro football team, they put all they have behind their college teams. The University has made money hand over fist from loyal Hawkeye fans. But browse forums where fans are allowed to comment and you find some fans not wanting to give support to the Hawk football program and many that are giving it grudgingly. Missouri has outsold Iowa in tickets to the Insight Bowl. This is unheard of! Iowa Hawk fans support teams through losing seasons, bad weather and hard economic times, but they may have reached a line they don't like crossing. They don't like supporting wrong doing.
Should a few bad apples ruin support for the whole Iowa football team? No. With grumbling (and rightfully so) the fans will support the Hawks this year in the Insight Bowl. The enthusiasm may put a chill in the Arizona air, but Hawkeye fans will be hot and heavy in their support for the team next year. GO HAWKS!!!!!!!!!
