Iowa Toilet Paper Stolen by Butts
Suzanne Butts was Charged Monday with Stealing Three Rolls of Two-ply Toilet Paper from the Marshall County Courthouse
As The Associated Press reports, police officers in the Iowa town charged Suzanne Marie Butts on Monday with theft after workers noticed rolls of two-ply mysteriously vanishing from the Marshall County Courthouse. According to employees at the courthouse, toilet paper started disappearing at "unusually high rates" from the women's restroom, as reported by the Marshalltown Times-Republican.
An employee caught Butts, 38, taking three rolls of two-ply toilet paper from a courthouse storage closet, according to Chief Lon Walker. Walker also questions why Butts was at the Courthouse in the first place, since she does not work there.
Butts faces a misdemeanor fifth-degree theft charge, usually resulting in less than a year behind bars. However, Butts could have an extended stay if she is convicted per Iowa's habitual offender law, as she holds prior convictions of theft. Likewise, officials suggest Butts' punishment may be founded on a per-roll basis.
According to The Associated Press, Walker stated, "She's facing potentially three years of incarceration for three rolls of toilet paper."
Butts further upheld that the incident was the first time she had stolen toilet paper. Further questions remained unanswered under advice from her attorney.
Butts told reporters, "He told me not to ask any questions until he's with me."
According to KETV, the missing toilet paper recently became an infamous occurrence at the courthouse. A parking lot attendant told KETV, "I've heard they call it the toilet paper caper."
KETV also reports Butts may end up behind bars for three years - one for each roll of toilet paper. Furthermore, Butts encountered more legal troubles as she was arrested on Friday for stealing nearly $30 from a family member. Friday's incident marks the fourth theft charge Butts has faced.
Supervisor Gordie Johnson told the Times-Republican, "We have three strikes and you're out and I consider each roll of toilet paper a strike."
Ultimately, a judge will decide which punishment is suitable for Butts' crime.

Post a Comment3 years is excessive... but in this economy, some people are having trouble affording toilet paper. I have a friend who takes extra napkins from the gas station and uses that for toilet paper because they're hard up and can't afford the real thing.
She assumed that with her last name, she deserved to have all the free toilet paper she wanted. Paragraph 4 has the greatest starting sentence in history. "Butts faces..."
Here's an idea...steal toilet paper from the ladies room at the clubs and the bars. It will force the ladies to use the men's room where there is no line! They will go to the stalls with plenty of toilet paper! Why? Because the stalls usually have missing or broken locks. Or they can squat and use the urinals. Either way the guys will get a free peep show.
That is very...interesting. I always wonder where those cops are when you REALLY need them. I mean, seriously, I can get a 4 pk for $1.00 here. How much money is it taking to house this lady in jail? I am not saying that stealing is right by no means, but that seems pretty severe in my opinion. I wonder what happens to all those pen thieves that take pens from people at work. What about people that pick up pennies from the floors of stores. I mean, the penny is actually on the floor of the store, so, technically it must belong to them...how many years per one of those? Weird....Great article, though!
Ms. Butts still has some hope; she MIGHT break out, go off and steal some more toilet paper, and then get her sentence reduced to under-a-month ... no, wait; that's only if her father is a multi-billionaire hotel-owner ...
Hey, I remember stealing toilet paper in college...I mean, who would do such a thing? steal toilet paper? How terrible! But sending the lady to jail for up to 3 years? Now THAT is ridiculous. Very interesting story, btw.
Love this article. Thanks for the info and great reporting.
Very catchy title- it really drew me in! However, I'm concerned about the punishment fitting the crime. Three years for three rolls of toilet paper? There are convicted rapist who do less time. Does anyone else find this ridiculous?
hahaha... how funny. Who steals toilet paper?
LOL> When I saw this under most emailed, I clicked on it thinking it would be under humor. It *is* funny, but I never thought it would be true. What a great headline. LOL
