I owned both the first and second generation iPad and I've got to say that I truly miss the original iPad case. The first generation iPad case was light, protected my screen from dust, scratches, and dirt, and also protected my tablet's back from scratches and minimal damage as well.
I purchased a black leather Smart Cover as one of my iPad 2's first accessories and although I love how it docks, auto-wake/sleeps, and protects my tablet's screen, I'm very concerned with the fact that my iPad 2's back is left vulnerable to scratches and damage. After looking around on the internet, I've found the Macally BOOKSTAND2B - which looked identical to the Smart Cover, but provides the back protection that the Smart Cover lacks.
The Macally BOOKSTAND2B case is perfect for traveling, daily use, and will preserve the quality [and resell value] of your iPad 2. As with the Smart Cover, the Macally BOOKSTAND2B has protective screen cover that folds into a dock - that's perfect for typing or docking your iPad 2 upright.
Although the Macally BOOKSTAND2B covers the back of your iPad 2, it's form fitting to your tablet - so there's no need to worry about issues with using your front and back facing cameras, headphone jack, docking port, power button, volume controls, or locking switch.
The Macally BOOKSTAND2B accessory resembles the Smart Cover, but, unfortunately, it doesn't have all of the same functions as Apple's Smart Cover screen protector. The Macally BOOKSTAND2B doesn't have the same magnetic abilities as Apple's Smart Cover and won't automatically snap to your tablet's screen or auto-wake and sleep your iPad 2.
It's a bummer that the Macally BOOKSTAND2B doesn't have the same power saving features of the Apple Smart Cover, but for $29.99 - $10 less than the Smart Cover - and the added back protection that it provides, the Macally BOOKSTAND2B is still a great accessory that provides maximum protection for your iPad 2.
