iPad Apps Perfect for Helping a Parent Through the Day

Five iPad Apps Most Used by a Parent to Make the Day Run Smoothly

Kristen Wilkerson
The iPad may strike the interests of some for its business or music applications, but it is also beneficial for families with the right set of apps. This article shares five iPad apps used first hand by a busy mom to help her family's daily life go a bit more smoothly.

Planner
A must-have tool in every parent's diaper bag, backpack, or purse is a calendar or planner. Look how often parents become taxi drivers, transporting kids to and from various events. It becomes essential to either color code or initial various activities to make the schedule easier to manage. The iPad app called "Mom's Agenda" alleviates this frustration. The app easily sets up an appointment book structure for mom (or the main parental figure using the agenda), as well as a calendar for each member of the family. Connect a photo to make an icon for quick person selection and assign an event only to its associated people. The best feature, however, is the app's ability to display by day, week, or month either one person's schedule or the entire family's activities. Using this app as a planner is also a great place to put reminders for returning library books or for sending lunch money.

Calculator
A second tool to have in a parent's iPad is some sort of calculator app. Whether balancing the checkbook, adding up the grocery bill, or helping with math homework, having a calculator on hand will certainly help. There are many different calculator apps, but try to choose one that includes scientific calculator functionality. This calculator style will be more beneficial for children in middle or high school, and is much cheaper than buying a real one which often gets lost in a drawer or under a pile of clothes.

Lists
What parent doesn't make lists? Whether the list includes grocery items or appointments to schedule, lists on scrap paper or sticky notes often get misplaced. Using the iPad app called "ToDo" alleviates this problem. This app allows input of various activities or shopping lists with a checkbox in front of each item. If looking at a grocery list, for example, as groceries are placed in the cart simply touch the little square in front of the item. The app instantly moves the item to the bottom of the list and grays it out.

Cooking
The iPad app from Epicurious makes it possible to remove the stack of cookbooks from a parent's kitchen. The app is easy to search by ingredient or meal, and it provides thousands of recipes with a simple touch. The iPad props up with particular covers, making it handy to look at while cooking.

Relaxation
Finally, at the end of a long day a parent can easily use an iPad app like MaxJournal to record their thoughts and refocus for another day. This app is password protected, allowing a parent to vent or write personal information without worrying about their son or daughter reading the entries.

Many other iPad apps exist for parent use. Some of the apps also work on the iPod touch, however, when it comes time for typing or ease of reading, the iPad may be a better option. To read more about the iPad or to research more parenting type of apps, begin searching at the Apple iPad store.

What do you think of these ideas? If you do not own an iPad, do you think it may make a good Christmas gift for a parent? Please leave a comment below.

I loved the iPad so much, I taught myself how to develop apps for them! The first one was to help track my daughter's chore allowance. Check out iChores for the iPad.I loved the iPad so much, I taught myself how to develop apps for them! The first one was to help track my daughter's chore allowance. Check out iChores for the iPad.

Family members love their iPads, but I'm not ready to purchase at this time. I love Epicurious and am sure this is a super app.

Someday-maybe I'll be able to get an iPad but I can't imagine getting rid of my cookbooks. Now, lists and calendars, on the other hand I'm all for getting rid of with apps.
