IPhone 3G, Buy or No Buy?

The Debate on the Value of Apple's New IPhone

Kelly Pawlak
Considering the iPhone G3 is finally being sold in Apple stores today, obviously its the main attraction all over television and hogging the lime light. The question here is if it's worth the buy for previous iPhone users. Steve Jobs really screwed his customers over this time: New customers get their iPhone 8GB for $199, while his previous customers have to pay $399. You'd think the whole, "I'm a loyal Apple user", thing would get you points right? Wrong. And on top of the fee, all iPhone seekers have to bring a grab bag full of things to your inconvenience. To purchase an iPhone, you need your credit card (if you planned on buying it with your saved milk money, forget it), social security number (apparently they don't want illegal immigrants buying iPhones), Valid government issued United States ID or drivers license, and if you're an old customer you need your current mobile number and a good standing account - I bet you regret ignoring that $200 overpaid balance now aren't you? And to just add that sweet coating on this candy apple, activation is going to take an estimated 15 minutes. So you pay more, go through more hassle, and get to wait an hour in line. Hopefully the turn out won't be big this year.

On the plus side the iPhone G3 connection is going to be faster away from Wifi, and all those annoying scratches that we deal with day to day on our very lovely aluminum back will be yesterday's news with the new plastic body. Also you get the choice between black and white. Not to mention the new GPS implemented. This time I can't give Apple my satisfaction with this upgraded iPhone. I feel like its just an appetizer to satisfy everyone who called for a cheaper model- well what they think is a cheaper model. After the two years of increased payment, they don't save that much. And their main cause for all the new security is their overdramatic need to prevent iPhone hacking. It's been taken to an all new level: ridiculous.

Needless to say, I can't believe Steve would do this to his users. I mean, he seems like a nice guy, why drop customer satisfaction for no reason? And that's what maybe draws me to the conclusion that he's trying to tell us NOT to buy the iPhone this year.. Besides purchasing this year would take away all the glory. Unlike last year when you pulled your iPhone out in-front of friends, completely awed with the technological marvel (what you REALLY payed $500 for) , and them commenting on how nice it is, you'll pull it out and one of your friends will be on their Personally, I say save the money for next year, because I think that he has a surprise for us once out contracts are up. Anyway the glory you payed $500 for last year is gone. Yes, when you pull out your iPhone, you other friends will not awe in amazement, but rather pull out their Instinct, Palm Centro, or even their very own iPhone now that it has a competitive price, and continue on with life. This next iPhone purchase is for you're own astonishment. I think its a much wiser decision to upgrade your current software, than to pay $500 for 3G and a cheap plastic body. Besides, your old iPhone is now a badge of your Apple user-ship and the money you payed. Wear it proud until next year.

Final Verdict:
If you don't have an iPhone already go for it.
If you do, hold on for another year (I know its hard)
