iPhone Applications that Help with School

The iPhone is an extremely popular device among young people. Not surprisingly, this means that a lot of high school and college students will have one. While I'm sure they prefer to play games on it, it can be used effectively in their school endeavors. There are four applications specifically that work well for college students.

MyGPA is a very simple program. You input your classes and your final grade for each class. It then calculate your GPA for the class and your total GPA for all classes.

myhomework lets you input your schedule. This includes the class name, course number, building, room number, professor and times. Once you have your schedule entered into the program, you can then keep track of your homework. You can sort your homework in a list. You can view it by day and there is a calendar view with due dates circled on it.

BB Learn is the application developed for Blackboard. Blackboard is the platform typically used to go to online classes. This application has the ability to view announcements, grades, forums, materials, course maps. Some will auto open safari and bring you to your actual blackboard login screen. This program has a lot of potential but in its present incarnation is not as good as it could be.

List Master is not strictly speaking for educational use. I use this application to develop lists. You can create simple or complicated lists. You can develop as many columns as you want. You can add a checkoff feature to delete each row as you complete it. It makes for a good to do list. For school purposes, this application keeps track of the classes I need to take, the classes I have taken, when I took them and the grade I got in each one. I check them off as I complete the class. This is useful when enrollment time comes around. Open up the application and you can see exactly what courses you still need to take to finish your degree.

Obviously, with the enormous database of iPhone applications, there are more education related applications. These four applications are simply the tip of the iceberg. I know that its fun playing games on your iPhone but stop and consider the potential you are wasting by not using it to its full capacity. Gone are the days of notes and scratch paper to write your homework on. Using your iPhone as a PDA will organize your life and take some stress out of school.
