Finding a IPhone Programming Course

W. Smith

By now we have all heard a story about some teenage kid who wrote some iPhone app and made some absurd amount of money of it. People are crazy about their iPhone apps. And if you are like me your first thought is - "hey, if some kid can write a simple alarm clock app and make $10k why can't I?" Well, the answer to that is pretty simple. I have no idea how to even begin with programming an iPhone. After making that realization I pretty much gave up on the idea. However, if you are more resilient than I and want to learn how to make your own iPhone apps I have compiled a short list of some popular iPhone programming courses.

Disclaimer: As previously mentioned I do not know how to program an iPhone nor have I taken any of the courses listed below. I provide the list simply as a sampling of what is available and make no assertions as to their effectiveness.

The List in no Particular Order

It is promises "hands-on" coding experience and expert guidance in learning Xcode 4, Objective-C, Cocoa Touch programming and the APIs included in the iOS SDK. This is for serious professional learns and comes with a serious price tag of $2295.00. Visit pragmaticstudio.com for more info.

ClassroomM: This is an-online based course taught by Stephen Kochan (best-selling author of many programming books and guides) it is offered in three parts. The first is Programming in Objective-C Part I: language and fundamentals, this covers the basic language fundamentals of programming. The next part is called Programming in Objective-C part II: Foundation Frameworks, this covers the basics of laying programming frameworks and foundations. The final part is called Writing iOS Applications: a hands-on approach, which focuses on bringing it all together and actually writing apps. The cost for these programs runs at about $125 per part. University of Maryland: This is a full upper level college course. It covers basically everything there is on iPhone programming. It begins with programming fundamentals and moves through to more complex programming focusing on "user interface design, media considerations related to gaming, audio and video, and usability and quality assessment." Stanford's Free iPhone Application Programming Course: This is probably the most popular option for obvious reasons. First it is free. Second is by Stanford University. This is a comprehensive course that covers all the essentials of iPhone programming. However, it isn't necessarily for beginners as it lists prerequisites of C language and programming experience at the level of 106B. Visit iPhone Application Programming for more info.
