iPod Shuffle Buyer's Guide

iPod Shuffle Tips for a First-time Buyer

Erin Duff
iPods are the MP3 player of choice in today's market, especially with the wide range and sizes available for purchase. However, it can be difficult to decide what you need, and if you prefer an iPod that doesn't take up much room or that you can take on an outdoor adventure, you should consider buying an iPod shuffle.

The iPod shuffle comes in 2GB and 4GB sizes, and will fit in the palm of your hand. You can clip it to your sleeve if you're biking or taking a walk, and is priced new from $59-$79. It can easily fit in the palm of your hand, and is the smallest size currently available. Because of it's small size, this iPod does not have a screen to watch videos or see what songs are playing, but the size is part of the appeal of the iPod shuffle. However, there is a VoiceOver feature that will announce the title and artist of the song playing, just in case you'd prefer that.

The iPod shuffle also comes in several different colors, including pink, green, blue, and silver, among others. It can hold up to 1,000 songs, which are separated into playlists that you create, and is ideal for a new iPod owner who is (or can) become familiar with the iTunes program.

Where should you buy the iPod shuffle? Consider the following locations:

#1: Check out the Apple store, either online or in-store. This is the best place to go if you're looking for advice, how-to instructions, in-depth reviews, customer support, and warranties. You'll likely find the widest range of colors and newest products.

#2: EBay and Half.com are good choices if you want to try to save money, and if you don't mind buying an older generation iPod. Amazon also has a wide range of new and used iPods, also including the older iPod generation models.

#3: Target sells the iPod shuffle as well, and sometimes offers sales that other stores don't. Check them out during the shopping season and you'll likely get a good deal, along with the possibility of a gift card or other offer.

#4: Wal-Mart is an accessible option for nearly everyone, and sometimes offers deals in order to compete with other stores. Often, Wal-Mart will sell the iPod brand for $5 less than the Apple store, so this is another good place to get a deal.

Keep in mind that some online deals may not come with headphones, so that's something to consider as you're making a purchase. This would happen most often on an online auction site or if someone is selling a used product, so be careful.

iPod shuffles make excellent gifts, especially when trying to save money or when introducing someone to an iPod for the first time. They are easy to use, and you can purchase them nearly everywhere. If you're unsure about your purchase, make sure you do additional research and determine what's best for you. Good luck, and happy shopping!

Thanks for the information. My husband has been thinking about getting a shuffle to replace his recently deceased iPod.
