IPod Version 6: Classic Redesigned

Jon Sugi
Apple has, as most of you know or will find out released a new line of redesigned iPods. I want to talk for a brief moment about the "classic" redesigned iPod. I personally have one of the 60 GB models that were discontinued i believe two years ago. I have content with my iPod with the small fact that I have filled it up three times and I need more space. In the need for more space and finding out that Apple has designed new iPods I have sold my old iPod and am in the process of purchasing the 160 GB iPod classic.

The first thing that caught my eye was the battery life of this iPod. The Apple website has a tech spec page at this URL: http://www.apple.com/ipodclassic/specs.html. The site says that the 160 GB iPod will play music for 40 hours and/or video for 7 hours. That is a very impressive number of hours. The old iPods could max out at 20 hours, and now the new ones are double that.

The size and casing of the new iPod is also new. The classics are thinner and have the same casing as the iPod nano does. It is very similar to the silver like casing the last nanos has. There is no easy way to describe how it feels, but it is much easier to use the click wheel and fingerprints don't appear as easily.

My favorite upgrade to the iPod classic has to be the new interface and play options. The iPod can now shuffle through the cover art like iTunes can. There is also another interface where the names of the song takes up the left half of the iPod screen and the album artwork is on the right half of the screen. I know these things are not the most important parts of deciding to purchase a new iPod. But they make the purchase worthwhile in my opinion.

The biggest reason I want the new iPod is for the hard drive memory. I have about 100 GB of music in my iTunes library but I have other things I want to put on the hard drive. And now I can use my iPod as an external hard drive.

Overall the new classic iPod doesn't have any new graphical enhancement. Things look prettier and more shiny. But in all truth nothing more than a much larger hard drive and some new playing interfaces are offered with the new iPod. But on the other side you have 7 hours of video at your disposal. This is one thing that really made me want to purchase a new classic. So look at the pros and cons if there are any and think about the new iPod classic.
